It’s time to scream like the demon goddess herself. \nPresented by Stage Rage.​​ \n“Stage Rage was originally conceptualized by Megan Tripaldi and Beth Somerville in Portland\, ME in 2014 with the creepiest production of King Lear (at least that we had seen). From there we have been generating projects that create original concepts for established work or creating and supporting new and exciting work from local artists based on myths\, legends\, and stories that have been around for centuries. DESCRIPTION:Stage Frenzy is a 24 Hour Theatre Marathon where\, over the course of 24 hours\, theater artists of various backgrounds\, skill-sets\, and artistic processes will convene to write\, direct\, act\, design\, and perform a freshly written crop of original short plays. Stage Frenzy is an opportunity for theater makers to create theater in its purest form\, with little opportunity to over-think or second guess artistic decisions. It is also an opportunity to take risks. \nThis is the time and place for participating artists to try something new\, just for fun. To write that fantasy/scifi/horror play they’ve always wanted to write or that play that is half dance or includes puppets if that’s what they’ve wanted to explore. To direct in the round or immersively or with movement or puppetry or with bare minimum set. To act a role that’s completely off type in just 12 hours. To design on a shoestring budget with a small set and thrift stores at your convenience. To stage manage in 12 hours with other stage managers\, doing a whole month’s worth of rehearsal process in a split second. To do something different: they’ve got 364 other days of the year to do what they know. \n  \nPresented by Chimera Theatre Collective. \nForged in Portland\, Maine\, in 2015\, Chimera Theatre Collective is focused on melding together our collective life experiences and artistic tendencies to bring new and overlooked works\, ideas\, artists\, and methods into the mainstream where they belong\, while also finding ways to shift the perception of what makes conventional theater.

Sadly\, it’s too rainy and chilly for the puppets!***\n  \nTry your hand at bunraku puppetry in a free playshop with Figures of Speech Theatre! Participants will work in groups of 2-3 puppeteers to animate a single puppet and create short\, non-verbal performances\, which we’ll share with each other. Along with noh and kabuki\, bunraku is one of the “high forms” of theater in Japan. We’ll make it easy & accessible for people of all ages and abilities! \nFigures of Speech Theatre creates and tours visionary works of performance forged at the intersection of poetry\, music\, sculpture and dance. \nOur vision for our educational programing—which takes place in all 16 Maine counties and beyond—is to engage imaginations\, impart skill-based training\, awaken consciousness regarding world cultures\, and expand students’ sense of life’s possibilities. We offer a range of programming and touring productions in service of that vision. \nFounded in 1982\, Figures of Speech Theatre is a four-time recipient of the UNIMA Citation of Excellence in Puppet Theater\, as well as grants from organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Maine Humanities Council\, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Honors include a six-month fellowship from the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission\, the New England Theater Conference’s award for Outstanding Achievement\, and a Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship for artistic director John Farrell.

DESCRIPTION:Join Somali Mainer’s Youth Network for an evening of community arts – from music and fashion to poetry and acting! \nSomali Mainer’s Youth Network’s mission is to bring unity and awareness through the Somali community by empowering youth\, getting both parents and youth involved in and aware of what goes on around their community. Through workshops\, community service\, and local events\, they aspire to unite Somali Youth and give them opportunities to break the language barrier\, gain educational opportunities\, and engage as citizens of Portland. Finally\, they give youth space where they can talk about issues around youth living in between two different cultures. They hope to educate the Somali youth in Southern Maine about the importance of having an education and how the choices they make a difference back home in Somalia.

DESCRIPTION:Stage Frenzy is a 24 Hour Theatre Marathon where\, over the course of 24 hours\, theater artists of various backgrounds\, skill-sets\, and artistic processes will convene to write\, direct\, act\, design\, and perform a freshly written crop of original short plays. Stage Frenzy is an opportunity for theater makers to create theater in its purest form\, with little opportunity to over-think or second guess artistic decisions. It is also an opportunity to take risks. \nThis is the time and place for participating artists to try something new\, just for fun. To write that fantasy/scifi/horror play they’ve always wanted to write or that play that is half dance or includes puppets if that’s what they’ve wanted to explore. To direct in the round or immersively or with movement or puppetry or with bare minimum set. To act a role that’s completely off type in just 12 hours. To design on a shoestring budget with a small set and thrift stores at your convenience. To stage manage in 12 hours with other stage managers\, doing a whole month’s worth of rehearsal process in a split second. DESCRIPTION:Maine Inside Out (MIO) initiates dialogue\, develops leadership\, and builds community across boundaries with collaborative original theater\, inside and outside correctional facilities. MIO youth inside of Long Creek Youth Development Center and in Maine communities of Biddeford\, Lewiston\, Portland\, and Waterville create original theater as a tool for social change. \nMIO’s outside community group\, comprised of members from our Biddeford\, Lewiston\, and Portland groups\, is currently touring “Love Is Alternatives to Incarceration” (Love Is). Love Is premiered as a collaboration with Portland Outright on November 8th\, 2017 to a sold-out crowd at USM’s Hannaford Hall. The performance includes a short film\, live performance\, and audio recordings of poetry by currently incarcerated member of MIO and Portland Outright. \n“Love Is Alternatives to Incarceration” interweaves multiple narratives of young people outcast from their home\, school\, and community and placed into systems designed to separate them. The play documents how\, despite these boundaries\, they create connection and community with each other. It is a call to action to love and care for each other more boldly. Themes addressed include: youth incarceration\, homelessness\, school discipline and school to prison pipeline\, racism\, substance use\, family separation\, social stigma\, trauma\, support\, resilience\, and love. \n \n
