DESCRIPTION:Join Somali Mainer’s Youth Network for an evening of community arts – from music and fashion to poetry and acting! \nSomali Mainer’s Youth Network’s mission is to bring unity and awareness through the Somali community by empowering youth\, getting both parents and youth involved in and aware of what goes on around their community. Through workshops\, community service\, and local events\, they aspire to unite Somali Youth and give them opportunities to break the language barrier\, gain educational opportunities\, and engage as citizens of Portland. Finally\, they give youth space where they can talk about issues around youth living in between two different cultures. They hope to educate the Somali youth in Southern Maine about the importance of having an education and how the choices they make a difference back home in Somalia.

Celebrated by the New York Times as a “weird and wonderful new play\,” playwright Sarah Ruhl explores the ancient Greek myth from the female perspective and with a fresh eye. \nPresented by Fenix Theatre\, a group of artists dedicated to staging the classics of theatre and literature. Their goal is to produce work ranging from the beautiful to the brutal\, that is always rooted in truth and lives where the creativity and commitment of the artist meets the imagination of the audience. \nThey value showcasing the passion and brilliance of local artists. They value the creation of dynamic\, inclusive\, low barrier theatre. SUMMARY:Stage Frenzy: A 24-Hour Theater Marathon!
DESCRIPTION:Stage Frenzy is a 24 Hour Theatre Marathon where\, over the course of 24 hours\, theater artists of various backgrounds\, skill-sets\, and artistic processes will convene to write\, direct\, act\, design\, and perform a freshly written crop of original short plays. Stage Frenzy is an opportunity for theater makers to create theater in its purest form\, with little opportunity to over-think or second guess artistic decisions. It is also an opportunity to take risks. \nThis is the time and place for participating artists to try something new\, just for fun. To write that fantasy/scifi/horror play they’ve always wanted to write or that play that is half dance or includes puppets if that’s what they’ve wanted to explore. To direct in the round or immersively or with movement or puppetry or with bare minimum set. To act a role that’s completely off type in just 12 hours. To design on a shoestring budget with a small set and thrift stores at your convenience. To stage manage in 12 hours with other stage managers\, doing a whole month’s worth of rehearsal process in a split second. SUMMARY:Maine Inside Out presents "Love is Alternatives to Incarceration"
DESCRIPTION:Maine Inside Out (MIO) initiates dialogue\, develops leadership\, and builds community across boundaries with collaborative original theater\, inside and outside correctional facilities. MIO youth inside of Long Creek Youth Development Center and in Maine communities of Biddeford\, Lewiston\, Portland\, and Waterville create original theater as a tool for social change. \nMIO’s outside community group\, comprised of members from our Biddeford\, Lewiston\, and Portland groups\, is currently touring “Love Is Alternatives to Incarceration” (Love Is). Love Is premiered as a collaboration with Portland Outright on November 8th\, 2017 to a sold-out crowd at USM’s Hannaford Hall. The performance includes a short film\, live performance\, and audio recordings of poetry by currently incarcerated member of MIO and Portland Outright. \n“Love Is Alternatives to Incarceration” interweaves multiple narratives of young people outcast from their home\, school\, and community and placed into systems designed to separate them. The play documents how\, despite these boundaries\, they create connection and community with each other. It is a call to action to love and care for each other more boldly. Themes addressed include: youth incarceration\, homelessness\, school discipline and school to prison pipeline\, racism\, substance use\, family separation\, social stigma\, trauma\, support\, resilience\, and love. \n \n

She has been developing her original style of interactive theater since 2013 and has combined her passion for experiential learning\, her love of storytelling and dynamic dance to create this high-energy show. \nShe performs in the Northeast region and brings 400 years of South African and North American history to life for audiences by involving them in performances that feature improvisation\, dance\, music\, poetry\, group discussion and activities with a great deal of raw emotion\, truth bombs\, and humor.
