DESCRIPTION:Join Somali Mainer’s Youth Network for an evening of community arts – from music and fashion to poetry and acting! \nSomali Mainer’s Youth Network’s mission is to bring unity and awareness through the Somali community by empowering youth\, getting both parents and youth involved in and aware of what goes on around their community. Through workshops\, community service\, and local events\, they aspire to unite Somali Youth and give them opportunities to break the language barrier\, gain educational opportunities\, and engage as citizens of Portland. Finally\, they give youth space where they can talk about issues around youth living in between two different cultures. They hope to educate the Somali youth in Southern Maine about the importance of having an education and how the choices they make a difference back home in Somalia.

Here’s a chance to Try Your Hand at an international calligraphy event at Congress Square Park! \nPeople from around the world will show you how to write in their native script\, such as Cyrillic\, Japanese\, Arabic. You’ll also have a chance to try Medieval and Modern Latin alphabet calligraphy. You’ll learn a few words and perhaps a proverb from the different cultures and be able to make a keepsake pendant with your choice of two languages. Come out and do something different at Congress Square Park! \nSupplies will be provided and instruction is free. \nThanks to Portland Downtown for your sponsorship of this event! \n\n\n  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:*This event is cancelled due to rain.*\nCome draw portraits of your neighbors!\nArtist Lucy Walker has invited artists and creative leaders from the community for portrait sessions in Congress Square Park – and you’re invited to draw them! No experience or supplies necessary. \nOptional: Bring a board for drawing on if you have one\, and any art supplies from home you’d like to play with. (We’ll also have supplies.) \nLucy Walker is a Maine artist and teacher living in Scarborough. She has a BA in Visual Art and English from Bowdoin College and\, among other artistic endeavors\, currently teaches painting at Muse Paint Bar in Portland. She delights in portraiture and has recently been working on a series of dancers in motion. \n  \nCommunity Drawing Circle is a series! Join us every second and fourth Tuesdays from 9 – 11am in Congress Square Park.
