SUMMARY:CE: Fenix Theatre Co. Presents Three Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Join Fenix Theatre Co. for one night only in Congress Square Park! \nYou can also catch a show at their regular venue — Thurs-Sat\, July 13th-Aug 5th at 7pm @ the stage at Deering Oaks. \nFenix is very excited to announce that they will be taking a break from Shakespeare for the summer of 2017 and heading to Moscow (or striving to!) with Anton Chekhov’s dramatic masterpiece THREE SISTERS! \nBuilding on their workshop of the play at Bowdoin College last spring\, they are thrilled to use the visceral and brilliant translation by Stepan Simek\, professor of theater at Lewis and Clark College and collaborator at Portland Experimental Theater Ensemble (Oregon). Professor Simek’s  work as a director was honored by the 1996 Drama League of New York with the “Drama League Directing Fellowship\,” and his translations of two contemporary Czech plays earned him the 2006 “PEN America Translation Award.”

SUMMARY:ICELANDx207: Container
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to host ICELANDx207: Container a multimedia installation by Portland Photographer Justin Levesque on view September 27 through October 12. The exhibition will be housed in an Eimskip shipping container. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday\, September 30 at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. \nICELANDx207: Container documents Iceland’s recent entry into Maine’s waterfront and economy via the Icelandic steamship company\, Eimskip. \nHours: \nMonday: Closed \nTuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday: noon- 5pm \nFriday: 2pm-8pm \nSaturday & Sunday: 11am – 4pm \nIn September 2015\, Levesque spent nine days on board the MV Selfoss\, an Eimskip container ship traveling from Portland to Iceland\, part of their Green Line shipping route. ICELANDx207: Container is the record of that voyage. Using photography and podcasts\, Levesque chronicled life aboard the ship with portraits of the all-Icelandic crew and images of the revitalized and bustling International Marine Terminal in Portland. In a nine-episode podcast ICELANDx207: Green Line\, Levesque conducts interviews with the crew and shares his day-to-day experiences traveling on the North Atlantic Ocean. \nLevesque describes Eimskip’s Green Line as “the invisible thread that connects our two cities\, countries\, cultures and economies.” \nICELANDx207: Container is on view in conjunction with the 2016 Arctic Council\, an international conference dedicated to economic development in the Arctic region. Hosted by the Maine North Atlantic Development Office\, the event takes place at the adjacent Westin Portland Harborview from October 4 through 6\, 2016. For more information\, visit www.maineandthearctic.com \nLevesque has received grants from the Maine Arts Commission and SPACE Gallery’s Kindling Fund to support the project. Levesque’s North Atlantic endeavors will continue in 2017\, when he sails through the Arctic for four weeks in June as part of The Arctic Circle residency program. The Arctic Circle brings together international artists of all disciplines as well as scientists\, architects\, and educators to collectively explore remote and fascinating destinations aboard the Antigua\, a barquentine Tall Ship sailing vessel. \nAbout Justin Levesque: \nJustin Levesque is a 2010 graduate of the University of Southern Maine\, where he received a BFA in photography\, specializing in the critical analysis of images and their impact on social norms and community expectations. Levesque lives in Portland and has his own design studio\, Shop Geometry. He also serves on the board for the Hemophilia Alliance of Maine and runs a group of programs called FOLX that celebrate arts\, creativity\, and visual literacy in the bleeding disorders community. \nJustin Levesque – Artist Website: http://shopgeometry.com

SUMMARY:Community Event: Concert Across America to End Gun Violence

(Mike Weisser\, Huffington Post\, 8.23.16). \nOn Sept. 25\, 2016\, the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence will happen at over 150 sites across the country. The concert will be introduced by Mayor Ethan Strimling\, with additional remarks by the mother of a gun murder victim\, Judi Richardson\, and Nick Wilson\, Executive Director of the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. \nThe event is co- sponsored by the Maine Gun Safety Coalition\, Maine Moms Demand Action\, Remembering Darien and the Friends of Congress Square Park. \nBig names are signing on to events in Brooklyn and LA including Jackson Browne\, Rosanne Cash\, Marc Cohn. Don Felder\, Ed Begley Jr.\, Kenny Loggins\, Ryan Cabrera and Sabian Kale. \nFor more information about the national event\, visit concertacrossamerica.org ; also visit the Portland event page at www.facebook.com/CAAportlandme/.

Artist James Leonard has adapted Tarot cards to help others process what he calls “overwhelming climate anxiety.” This summer he’s traveling the country\, making one-day stops to give climate change divinatory readings inside a special\, handsewn tent. \nLeonard will be inside his tent\, offering free\, private climate change readings. Everyone is invited. Readings last approximately 15 minutes each and are given on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nLeonard calls his artwork The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies. From the outside\, the tent looks like a cross between a post-apocalyptic wigwam and a children’s blanket fort. The rainbow interior is made out of brightly colored recycled clothing. It required over 500 hours of hand sewing to complete. Detailed tea-colored ink paintings of different plant and animal species—each reportedly affected by climate change are pinned to the outside. \nLeonard explains\, “A lot of thought has gone into The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies. I wanted to create a space for contemplation\, where participants can slow down\, articulate questions and find clarity. Climate change is a universal concern. Art is the perfect place for expressing and evaluating concern.” \nJames Leonard is an internationally exhibited artist. He recently finished a 2016 artist residency at MASS MoCA. In 2015\, he was artist-in-residence at the Boston Center for the Arts. When not on the road\, he lives and works in Brooklyn\, NY.

SUMMARY:Amarantos Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Amarantos Quartet back to Congress Square Park this season for an encore performance. \nAll four members of Amarantos Quartet are classically trained\, though their work as an ensemble also reflects their experience outside of classical music. From playing fiddle in an old-time band\, to performing and recording with pop artists\, to playing in a Middle Eastern takht\, all four members of the quartet make a life of creatively pushing the limits. They share a belief that their instruments\, experiences\, and training allow them to cross the musical\, artistic\, and even social boundaries associated with different genres. Together as a string quartet\, Amarantos seeks to show that this ensemble of two violins\, a viola and a cello can be timeless and borderless. \nWith this foundation\, Amarantos draws from the traditional classical canon but also from other musical genres. Violist\, arranger\, and composer Bryan Brash has adapted and continues to adapt many works\, from tangos\, to jazz\, to pop songs\, for the quartet. The group also seeks to bring their music out of the traditional concert hall and into venues where classical string players can reach new audiences. Though some might see it as innovative or progressive\, this decision is partially motivated by the origins of chamber music and the string quartet\, when performances were often held in smaller venues where performer and spectator could be close and even interactive. So\, while you can experience Amarantos Quartet’s music in a more traditional concert format\, you can also catch them playing more casually in environments such as a cocktail bar or a house-concert. \nSince coming together in Portland\, Maine in 2013\, the group has performed with pop artist Halsey on The TonightShow with Jimmy Fallon; on Sofar Sounds Maine on their own\, and again as guests of artist Sara Hallie Richardson; at the TEDxDirigo Mavericks and Misfits; on The Cold River Radio Show; at The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center; and also regularly throughout Maine and the greater Portland area on their own and in collaboration with many other artists.
