SUMMARY:Summer Swing Dance with the Soggy Po' Boys
DESCRIPTION:Summer Swing Dance with the Soggy Po’ Boys and Portland Swing Project! \nBorn on a snowy Fat Tuesday night of 2012\, the Soggy Po’ Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans’ music as part of their Tuesday residency in their home town of Dover\, New Hampshire. In between local gigs they’ve fit in more than a hundred shows every year\, from festivals and concerts to politics-infused burlesque collaborations and street parades\, spanning Maine to Georgia.  The band is equally at home everywhere it goes\, though\, and part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. The Soggy Po’ Boys serve their jazz messy\, mixing brass-fueled mayhem with spirituals\, Meters-style old-school funk\, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition. NHPR describes the band in this way: “If you’ve been to Sonny’s Tavern in Dover\, New Hampshire on a Tuesday night\, you could be forgiven for feeling like you’ve stepped into a New Orleans jazz club.” www.soggypoboys.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d swing music spanning a century to local venues. We’re also some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet – we have a bunch of fun so come join us! SUMMARY:Salsa in the Square with PM Salsa and Primo Cubano!
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss our sizzlin’ Salsa in the Square evenings with PM Salsa featuring Primo Cubano! ALL Level dancers wanted!  From 6:00-6:30 enjoy a free 1/2 hour beginner Salsa lesson with Wendy of PM SALSA\, followed by live music and dancing with Primo Cubano. Come dance the night away on the 4th Friday of the month. \nPM Salsa seeks to spread the joy\, creativity\, athleticism and passion that is brought about through salsa dancing and to grow a stronger community through dance. Wendy Edwards of PM Salsa believes the best part of salsa dancing is in seeing people come together in a positive\, healthy environment while celebrating people’s individuality. Her goal is to provide people with the foundation and tools for them to build on their own individual style. Her classes are fun and welcoming for all. \nPrimo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music dating back to the turn of the 20th Century.  Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nGuitarist Paul D’Alessio\, a simple-living country man himself\, came into contact with this music on a trip to Cuba in 2004 with the Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association\, a cooperative between Brunswick\, ME and the city of Trinidad\, Cuba.  He began learning to play Son music on a guitar-like instrument native to Cuba called the tres and subsequently formed Primo Cubano\, “Cuban Cousin”. \nTrumpeter Marc Chillemi has also spent time in Cuba and has played in various other Latin groups.  He also plays percussion and sings on the choruses\, or coros\, to which the lead singer\, or sonero responds with an improvised lyric. \nLenny Hatch has loved the congas since he first heard Mongo Santamaría play Watermelon\, and he has been playing them in addition to the bongó and other percussion instruments for over 20 years now. \nEric Winter has been singing all his life and began studying Spanish at the age of 12.  He has become particularly interested in Cuban music in the last few years.  Eric also plays maracas and is the newest addition to Primo Cubano. \nKeeping it all together is Duane Edwards on the bass fiddle. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta and plays in various groups in the area.  As a jazz student\, he took very quickly to the tumbao bass pattern that makes this music so danceable.

SUMMARY:Fódhla - Irish music
DESCRIPTION:Fódhla (pronounced “foh-luh”) – Irish music from Portland and Boston \n\n\n\n\nAfter 15 years of performing together and recording on each other’s solo albums\, Portland\, Maine-based flute player Nicole Rabata and Boston-based fiddler Ellery Klein decided a group together was long overdue. With the addition of Bethany Waickman on guitar\, the trio found a sound rooted in the traditional Irish music Ellery and Nicole honed during years abroad in the Irish cities of Cork\, Limerick\, and Ennis. The trio is also influenced by the depths of Nicole’s virtuosic classical music career\, Ellery’s Americana sounds\, and Bethany’s soft-spoken\, yet driving\, guitar playing. \nFódhla have been well received at festivals such as Portland’s Saltwater Festival\, the Maine Celtic Celebration\, and the Boston Celtic Music Festival. Their debut recording\, Notes from Millpond\, was released in December 2015 to a sold-out show at Acoustic Artisans in Portland. \nBios: \nFiddler Ellery Klein brings a style steeped in traditional Irish sounds seasoned with American fiddle styles. She toured with the Billboard-charting Irish music group Gaelic Storm from 2003-2007 and was a founding member of the all-female ensemble Long Time Courting. In 2015 she was invited to be a featured soloist with Duluth\, MN’s Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra\, performing Nickitas Demos’ Double Concert for Celtic and Bluegrass Fiddle. She holds an MA in Traditional Irish Music from the University of Limerick. www.elleryklein.net \nIrish flutist Nicole Rabata is well known for her diverse musical interests including the classical\, Celtic\, and Brazilian choro genres. Holding an International Artist Diploma and Masters Degree in Performance from Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester\, England\, she is on the faculty at Colby College and the University of Maine at Augusta. She spent four years in the west of Ireland immersing herself in traditional music\, and has since traveled as a teacher and performer to Sweden\, India\, Germany\, Italy\, France and the UK. www.nicolerabata.com \nBethany Waickman is a guitarist based out of Portland\, Maine. She grew up in a musical family in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York state. After college she spent some time traveling\, hiking\, and playing music in Ireland. Upon returning\, she moved to Boston to focus on music. She co-founded the contra dance trio\, Anadama\, and is the guitarist for VT-based fiddler/singer Lissa Schneckenburger. She’s toured across the US\, Canada\, Sweden\, Denmark\, Belgium\, and Germany. Bethany moved to Maine in 2013 and has been enjoying the Portland session scene as well as keeping in rotation in the New England contra dance circuit. www.bethanywaickman.com

SUMMARY:Swing Dance featuring Soggy Po Boys & Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:Born on a snowy Fat Tuesday night of 2012\, the Soggy Po’ Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans’ music as part of their Tuesday residency in their home town of Dover\, New Hampshire. SUMMARY:Swing Dance with Tom Whitehead’s Rites of Swing and Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:This group is lead by vocalist\, guitarist and pianist\, Tom Whitehead. The ensemble also features Michael Arciero on guitar\, Kris Day on upright bass and Don Whitney on drums\, with special guest Ellen Carlson on violin. The sound evokes the smooth\, acoustic feeling of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz style\, but with a distinctly American flavor of vocal standards from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s. \nWhitehead sings in a very mature\, improvisatory style that is greatly complimented by Arciero’s dynamic and virtuosic lead guitar playing. Day and Whitney provide a seamless and effortless rhythmic foundation that swings hard\, but is never overbearing. Carlson’s fiddle playing evokes the sophisticated swing of the great Stephan Grappelli along with the earthy grittiness of Vassar Clemens and Johnny Gimble. This group sails along like a Clipper Ship of a bygone era – smooth\, elegant\, powerful and a real joy to listen and dance to. www.tomwhiteheadmusic.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. SUMMARY:Salsa in the Square with PM Salsa & Primo Cubano
