SUMMARY:PMA Films: When We Were Kings
DESCRIPTION:A free outdoor screening of the 1996 Academy Award Winning documentary When We Were Kings. Co-Presented by the Portland Museum of Art. Film starts at dusk (approx 8pm). \nIn 1974\, boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman came to the still-emerging and politically unstable African nation of Zaire for what Ali called the “Rumble in the Jungle\,” a highly publicized world heavyweight championship fight. Documentarian Leon Gast flew to Zaire to film both the fight and a music festival (featuring B.B. King\, The Pointer Sisters\, and Miriam Makeba) organized by promoter Don King. Gast’s footage was shelved for 22 years due to legal and financial problems\, but when it was finally released in 1996\, When We Were Kings provided a vivid portrait of the controversial Ali. At 33\, he was considered past his prime for the Zaire fight\, and his refusal to serve in the U.S. military on moral grounds was still an issue in the minds of many. But here\, Ali displays strength\, skill\, intelligence\, and tremendous charm\, making it clear how he became one of the most renowned figures in the world of sports. And\, while George Foreman is best known today as a genial commercial pitchman\, he’s seen here as a strong\, forbidding opponent\, not especially articulate and seemingly unstoppable. The film also features interviews with several notable fight fans\, including Norman Mailer\, George Plimpton\, and Spike Lee. A fascinating document of a great moment in sporting and cultural history\, When We Were Kings received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won a Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of one of the best films from one of the best years in American Cinema\, 1984’s Ghostbusters. That’s saying a lot since Gremlins\, The Karate Kid\, Beverly Hills Cop\, Temple of Doom\, Terminator\, Purple Rain\, Spinal Tap\, Repo Man\, Romancing The Stone\, A Nightmare on Elm Street\, Sixteen Candles and a ton more all came out in 1984.\nWhat the heck do we mean by an “interactive screening?” – Each visitor or group will get their own noisemaker (like a kazoo for example) attached to a notecard with instructions for when to use said noisemaker (every time a character says “gatekeeper” for example).  If you’ve seen it 100 times come flex your Ghostbusters viewing muscles by being right on cue\, if you’ve never seen Ghostbusters – first of all what’s wrong with you? jk – we can’t think of a better first time to see it than this\, and if you’re like most people and have seen it but it’s been awhile come watch it with fresh eyes…and a buzzer. \nINSTRUCTIONS AND PARTICIPATORY MATERIALS AT 6:00\, FILM BEGINS AT DUSK.

DESCRIPTION:The Whole World Waiting co-presented with the Telling Room \nA twilight screening of THE WHOLE WORLD WAITING\, a Telling Room film that tackles the myths of America from the perspective of immigrant and refugee youth. \nTeaching artist Sonya Tomlinson and filmmaker David Meiklejohn created The Whole World Waiting to showcase all fifteen students from The Telling Room’s Young Writers & Leaders program (2011-2012) in three-minute segments. Each story tackles the myths of America told from the perspective of immigrant and refugee youth. \nIn 2012 the film debuted at SPACE Gallery to a sold-out crowd. Three years later we’re bringing the film\, filmmakers\,  and several of the students back for a free screening and Q&A to follow. The trailer can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1gnQNZVJn4\n\nYoung Writers & Leaders (YWL) is a free\, afterschool literary arts program for teenage refugee and immigrant English Language Learners. The program runs for nine months each year\, engaging each student in weekly after school sessions that provide unparalleled opportunities to work directly with some of Maine’s best writers and artists\, creative writing and arts programming and job skills and leadership training.\nYWL is offered in partnership with Portland\, Deering\, and Casco Bay High Schools\, and has served teens from Haiti\, Burundi\, Rwanda\, Congo\, Somalia\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Russia\, Sudan and Kenya\, improving their writing skills\, academic performance\, social and emotional wellbeing\, and their chances of future success.
