SUMMARY:Swing Dance with Tom Whitehead’s Rites of Swing and Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:This group is lead by vocalist\, guitarist and pianist\, Tom Whitehead. The ensemble also features Michael Arciero on guitar\, Kris Day on upright bass and Don Whitney on drums\, with special guest Ellen Carlson on violin. The sound evokes the smooth\, acoustic feeling of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz style\, but with a distinctly American flavor of vocal standards from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s. \nWhitehead sings in a very mature\, improvisatory style that is greatly complimented by Arciero’s dynamic and virtuosic lead guitar playing. Day and Whitney provide a seamless and effortless rhythmic foundation that swings hard\, but is never overbearing. Carlson’s fiddle playing evokes the sophisticated swing of the great Stephan Grappelli along with the earthy grittiness of Vassar Clemens and Johnny Gimble. This group sails along like a Clipper Ship of a bygone era – smooth\, elegant\, powerful and a real joy to listen and dance to. www.tomwhiteheadmusic.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d swing music spanning a century to local venues. We’re also some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet – we have a bunch of fun so come join us! SUMMARY:Choro Louco (Brazilian Choro)
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian Choro has been around for over a hundred years.  Its beautiful melodies\, complex harmonies\, and syncopated rhythms combine elements of European folk and classical\, ragtime\, jazz\, Latin\, and African music creating a style that is uniquely Brazilian and enormously appealing. \nChoro Louco was formed in 2013 and has evolved into a classic sounding choro ensemble. They are driven by a love of the music and a desire to share it with others. \nCarl Dimow\, flute and guitar\, has played jazz\, classical\, and klezmer music here and abroad with the Casco Bay Tummlers\, and numerous other ensembles. Nicole Rabata is well known for her diverse musical interests\, including celtic\, classical and Brazilian choro genres.  Joel Eckhaus comes from an old time/jazz/pop/vaudeville background and has applied his knowledge of the ukulele to the cavaquinho\, Brazil’s version of the uke. David Newsam. 7-string guitar and mandolin\, brings decades of experience as a jazz and classical guitarist to his choro playing.  Eric La Perna\, fabulous percussionist with Okbari and Alhan\, brings his great hand percussion skills to the pandeiro\, the Brazilian tambourine.

SUMMARY:Amarantos Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Amarantos Quartet back to Congress Square Park this season for an encore performance. \nAll four members of Amarantos Quartet are classically trained\, though their work as an ensemble also reflects their experience outside of classical music. From playing fiddle in an old-time band\, to performing and recording with pop artists\, to playing in a Middle Eastern takht\, all four members of the quartet make a life of creatively pushing the limits. They share a belief that their instruments\, experiences\, and training allow them to cross the musical\, artistic\, and even social boundaries associated with different genres. Together as a string quartet\, Amarantos seeks to show that this ensemble of two violins\, a viola and a cello can be timeless and borderless. \nWith this foundation\, Amarantos draws from the traditional classical canon but also from other musical genres. Violist\, arranger\, and composer Bryan Brash has adapted and continues to adapt many works\, from tangos\, to jazz\, to pop songs\, for the quartet. The group also seeks to bring their music out of the traditional concert hall and into venues where classical string players can reach new audiences. Though some might see it as innovative or progressive\, this decision is partially motivated by the origins of chamber music and the string quartet\, when performances were often held in smaller venues where performer and spectator could be close and even interactive. So\, while you can experience Amarantos Quartet’s music in a more traditional concert format\, you can also catch them playing more casually in environments such as a cocktail bar or a house-concert. \nSince coming together in Portland\, Maine in 2013\, the group has performed with pop artist Halsey on The TonightShow with Jimmy Fallon; on Sofar Sounds Maine on their own\, and again as guests of artist Sara Hallie Richardson; at the TEDxDirigo Mavericks and Misfits; on The Cold River Radio Show; at The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center; and also regularly throughout Maine and the greater Portland area on their own and in collaboration with many other artists.
