SUMMARY:Square Hop feat. Sea Level & The Memorial Skylight
DESCRIPTION:On June 7 from 6-8pm\, Sea Level & The Memorial Skylight will present a full park sound installation – a living moving three dimensional soundscape. As visitors navigate Congress Square Park\, they’ll experience in-the-moment individualized and collective musical compositions that are responsive to natural parameters like sunset\, humidity\, and the activity of people\, animals\, and insects. The performance will include various musical guests as well as live shadow art accompaniment directed by Ian Bannon of Figures Of Speech Theater. \nSea Level & The Memorial Skylight is the pseudonym of musician/conceptual artist Dan Capaldi. The essence of Sea Level & The Memorial Skylight is a fusion of sampled material/field recordings and tight orchestral compositions\, formatted/performed live as a three dimensional sound installation with conscious attention to the evolving trends in human attention and perceived value. Dan studied Drum performance and Film scoring at Berklee College of Music and since has composed music for all varieties of film\, live art installations as well as frequently touring the United States and Europe with various groups and as a solo artist. \n  \nThis event is part of Square Hop\, hosted in collaboration with Portland Downtown. \nFrom 6-8pm on June 7\, you can stroll — or dance\, should the mood strike — from square to square to experience some of Portland’s best & most unique local entertainment. DESCRIPTION:Congress Square Park is excited to be a host for the 7th annual Make Music Portland! Portland once again joins hundreds of cities around the world in celebrating the Summer Solstice & Make Music Day by filling the streets with free musical performances\, music lessons\, and community play-a-long events. \nMake Music Portland is a free\, all-day celebration of sound that is open to all ages\, genres\, styles\, and abilities. There will be play-a-long events for the musicians and non-musicians to participate in and a ton of performances by Maine musicians. \nIn Congress Square Park\, join us for the Instrument Petting Zoo! — a FREE music playshop for kids! \nAdvanced high-school musicians will be setting up an instrument “petting zoo” for elementary and middle school students to explore! Introduce yourself or your child to a new instrument\, participate in a casual mini-lesson\, and gain further resources about any instrument of your choice. There will be stations in Violin\, Cello\, Viola\, Guitar\, Drum kit\, Trumpet\, Bass\, Hand Drums\, Saxophone\, Banjo and more! There will be information on accessible and affordable lessons and highschoolers will elaborate on where music education has taken them (some have toured all over the country with orchestras\, others are in rock bands\, and all have made amazing friendships through music). DESCRIPTION:Back again for July 2019! A few of Portland’s well-traveled squares are about to get more colorful and musical with the addition of Pianos in the Squares. \nPianos in the Squares is a project of City of Portland Parks\, Recreation & Facilities\, Portland Downtown\, and Friends of Congress Square Park. Colorful\, painted pianos will be available for all to play and enjoy in Monument Square\, Congress Square\, Longfellow Square and Bramhall Square throughout the month of July. \nJoin us for the big reveal of Pianos in the Squares on Friday\, June 28th from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. \n  \nSchedule of Ribbon Cuttings and Performances:\n11:00 AM – 11:30 AM Bramhall Square\n11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Longfellow Square\n12:00 PM – 12:30 PM Congress Square\n12:30 PM – 1:00 PM Monument Square \n  \nPianos will be placed in the squares starting on Monday\, June 24th. Each piano will be painted by local artists and supported by a local business. A special thank you to Sherwin Young of Starbird Music and Piano Gallery for sourcing and tuning the pianos. \nSally DeLuca\, Director of Parks\, Recreation & Facilities says “This project adds to Portland’s artistic vibrancy. You never know who will sit down and play and you probably didn’t know just how talented people are. Pianos in the Squares doesn’t know any boundaries; someone might sit down and play chopsticks and someone else might wow passerbys with Beethoven. The possibilities are endless.” \n  \nPianos in the Squares will be hosted throughout the month of July. SUMMARY:Salsa Night with Primo Cubano & PM Salsa
DESCRIPTION:Come to Congress Square Park from 6-8pm for a free evening of hopping music and salsa dance (lessons included!). \nPM Salsa teacher Wendy Edwards has been teaching for over 15 years. Come at 6pm to learn basic moves and enjoy an evening of social dance with music by Primo Cubano! \nPrimo Cubano will play traditional Cuban dance music called “SON\,” which dates back to the turn of the 20th Century. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nPrimo Cubano consists of Paul D’Alessio on Tres Cubano and vocals\, Marc Chillemi on Trumpet\, percussion and vocals\, Lenny Hatch on Congas\, Bongo and Bell\, Duane Edwards on Upright Bass\, and Eric Winter on Timbales\, percussion and vocals. \nPrimo Cubano interprets the classic Son Cubano with affinity\, appreciation and inspiration bringing this vibrant music to life for audiences in Maine and beyond.
