SUMMARY:Portland Swing Project feat. Hadacol Bouncers
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Swing Project for live music and swing dancing in the Square! This month\, Hadacol Bouncers will perform. Masks are strongly encouraged at these close-contact events. \nPortland Swing Project spreads the appreciation of swing music and dance through weekly classes and events for all levels of experience. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d music to venues throughout Maine. Absolute beginners welcome\, no partner needed. \n“The Hadacol Bouncers formed in the summer of 2013 for a Portland\, Maine Swing Dance festival and have never looked back.  A Chicago and New Orleans-syle dance band\, they have continued their close association with the dance crowd and are always looking to play for dancers. The group is a joint effort by co-band leaders Tom Whitehead (piano) and Peter Dunphy (banjo). Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and bebop piano. Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago-style jazz since he was fourteen. For the Hadacol Bouncers\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. Like any band of this size\, there are several players who rotate in and out\, but the following are the established core.”

SUMMARY:SPACE Presents: Popeye
DESCRIPTION:Film preceded by a special performance by Jimmy Dority and Friends playing the music of Harry Nilsson\, Van Dyke Parks\, and more. \nCome to Congress Sq. Park for a special 40th Anniversary Restoration screening of Robert Altman’s one-of-a-kind big budget musical oddity. This is Robin Williams’ big screen debut. Shelley Duvall starred in Popeye after completing production of The Shining\, and yes the films came out the same year as each other\, in 1980. The production is famous for going wildly over-budget as the Popeye team built a town in Malta from scratch to create the set for Sweethaven- the set still stands and has become a tourist attraction. Of the film’s many strange rewards\, perhaps most enduring are the songs constructed by Harry Nilsson and Van Dyke Parks. Robert Altman struggled to find funding for his work throughout the 1980’s as a result of Popeye’s mixed reception\, but the film has endured and deservedly become somewhat of a cult-classic. If nothing else Popeye is an unforgettable time-stamp and convergence of talents\, with elaborate set pieces\, scene-chewing performances and an oddly gentle touch from one of cinema’s great directors. The Old Port wishes it was Sweethaven. Film starts at 8pm. \nPopeye (free screening in Congress Sq Park) with Jimmy Dority and Friends

SUMMARY:Literary Lunch: Evening Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Literary Lunch: Evening Edition in Congress Square Park with Gibson Fay-LeBlanc and Max GarciaDeke Dangle Dive by Gibson Fay-LeBlanc Conover. Gibson and Max will have a conversation about Gibson’s new book Deke\, Dangle\, Dive\, and discuss songwriting\, poetry\, and more with some live music from Max. Print: A Bookstore will have copies of the book for sale at the event.\n\nAbout Deke\, Dangle\, Dive\nWhat is a person to do upon finding out that his older brother has six months to live? What is a father to tell his young sons about the everyday violence\, inequities\, and injustices of the world? What is a husband to do when confronted with his domestic foibles and failings? What can poems possibly offer us in the face of unanswerable questions? Deke Dangle Dive explores illness\, fatherhood\, brotherhood\, and masculinity through a variety of lenses\, including ice hockey\, contemporary culture\, and the natural world. This unique collection considers how poems can speak to us and through us when all seems lost.

SUMMARY:"5 Year Supper" Anniversary Party & Community Meal
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Congress Square Park is marking our 5th anniversary this season! We’re celebrating the thousands of people who helped create this one-of-a-kind place by throwing a casual picnic party. Delicious local food\, outstanding local artists – including live music…  All free and all fun. Join us! \nBring your own food and picnic with us\, or get a tasty BBQ dinner from Moe’s Original BBQ (pay what you can donation). \nLive music featuring Kafari (6-7 pm) and Sylvain’s Acadian Aces (7-8 pm). \n‘Kafari’ is the alias of Portland\, ME based ambient loop master\, pianist\, and rhythm bonesman Ahmad Hassan Muhammad. Kafari seamlessly weaves together jazz\, electronic music\, ambient music\, and hip hop in his experimental manipulations of loops taken from old jazz recordings. His most recent release ‘Knockturnes’ is a dreamy\, hypnotic tribute to the legendary Bill Evans trio. Using his keyboard controller\, Kafari manipulates the pitch and tempo of old jazz samples\, altering them nearly beyond recognition and transforming them into etheral backdrops for keyboard and saxophone improvisations. \nSylvain’s Acadian Aces keeps the ‘cajun flame alive in old Acadie with an energetic brand of raw\, rootsy ‘cajun music derived directly from the source. The vocal power of guitarist Robert Sylvain and charismatic fiddler Hawk Kallweit supplies a one-two punch that’s instantly compelling and distinctive. With Maine’s own true accordian ace Junior Stevens on button-box\, and the unstoppable combination of Tom Jacques on upright bass and Kris Day on drums\, Sylvain’s Acadian Aces deliver heart-wrenching lovesongs and electrifying dance numbers that can bring even the most stoic New Englanders to their feet. Rooted in classic cajun two-steps and waltzes\, the repertoire also folds in elements of creole and zydeco traditions along with original Americana and rock ‘n roll sensibilities. \n
