SUMMARY:"5 Year Supper" Anniversary Party & Community Meal
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Congress Square Park is marking our 5th anniversary this season! We’re celebrating the thousands of people who helped create this one-of-a-kind place by throwing a casual picnic party. Delicious local food\, outstanding local artists – including live music…  All free and all fun. Join us! \nBring your own food and picnic with us\, or get a tasty BBQ dinner from Moe’s Original BBQ (pay what you can donation). \nLive music featuring Kafari (6-7 pm) and Sylvain’s Acadian Aces (7-8 pm). \n‘Kafari’ is the alias of Portland\, ME based ambient loop master\, pianist\, and rhythm bonesman Ahmad Hassan Muhammad. Kafari seamlessly weaves together jazz\, electronic music\, ambient music\, and hip hop in his experimental manipulations of loops taken from old jazz recordings. His most recent release ‘Knockturnes’ is a dreamy\, hypnotic tribute to the legendary Bill Evans trio. Using his keyboard controller\, Kafari manipulates the pitch and tempo of old jazz samples\, altering them nearly beyond recognition and transforming them into etheral backdrops for keyboard and saxophone improvisations. \nSylvain’s Acadian Aces keeps the ‘cajun flame alive in old Acadie with an energetic brand of raw\, rootsy ‘cajun music derived directly from the source. The vocal power of guitarist Robert Sylvain and charismatic fiddler Hawk Kallweit supplies a one-two punch that’s instantly compelling and distinctive. With Maine’s own true accordian ace Junior Stevens on button-box\, and the unstoppable combination of Tom Jacques on upright bass and Kris Day on drums\, Sylvain’s Acadian Aces deliver heart-wrenching lovesongs and electrifying dance numbers that can bring even the most stoic New Englanders to their feet. Rooted in classic cajun two-steps and waltzes\, the repertoire also folds in elements of creole and zydeco traditions along with original Americana and rock ‘n roll sensibilities. \n

SUMMARY:Hungry March Band
DESCRIPTION:Hungry March Band\, the genre-defying brass band and spectacle troupe based in New York City — voted “Most Entertaining” at Bath Heritage Days’ July 4th Parade — comes to Portland Thursday\, July 25\, 2019 for a free performance in Congress Square Park. Coined “NYC’s finest guerrilla ambulatory music ensemble\,” by Time Out New York\, the group’s music and performance experience captures the essence of contemporary city life: anything can and will happen at a Hungry March Band show! Expect audience interaction\, dancer shenanigans and musician antics set to the soundtrack of powerfully played original tunes\, drawn from traditions of global brass\, jazz\, punk\, rock\, ska and everything in between. The fun lasts from 6 to 8pm and is family-friendly. \nHungry March Band has presented its high-octane\, thrill-a-minute mayhem to ecstatic audiences around the world since its debut at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in 1997. While they may be the only such ensemble daring to quadrille over hallowed ground\, suffice it to say\, Hungry March Band does it in hip-hop beats and downtown vibes.” — The NYC Jazz Record \nDon’t miss this rare opportunity to check out one of New York City’s most legendary musical and performance ensembles! Presented in conjunction with Friends of Congress Square Park. \n\nAbout Hungry March Band\n \nHungry March Band (HMB) fuses street band tradition with raw power and performance art antics. SUMMARY:Portland Swing Project feat. Hadacol Bouncers
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Swing Project for live music and swing dancing in the Square! This month\, Hadacol Bouncers will perform. \nPortland Swing Project spreads the appreciation of swing music and dance through weekly classes and events for all levels of experience. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d music to venues throughout Maine. Absolute beginners welcome\, no partner needed. \n“The Hadacol Bouncers formed in the summer of 2013 for a Portland\, Maine Swing Dance festival and have never looked back.  A Chicago and New Orleans-syle dance band\, they have continued their close association with the dance crowd and are always looking to play for dancers. The group is a joint effort by co-band leaders Tom Whitehead (piano) and Peter Dunphy (banjo). Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and bebop piano. Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago-style jazz since he was fourteen. For the Hadacol Bouncers\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. Like any band of this size\, there are several players who rotate in and out\, but the following are the established core.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free concert and dance party with Sabouyouma! \nSabouyouma is a high energy 7-piece polyrhythmic groove machine that formed through ongoing musical relationships in Burlington\, Vermont’s vibrant West-African dance and drumming scene. Sabouyouma is led by Guinean-born Ousmane Camara: the band’s front man\, composer\, and master Balafonist (the Balafon is a West-African marimba). \nIn 2017 Sabouyouma opened for nationally touring acts like Xenia Rubinos (Brooklyn)\, Polyrhythmics (Seattle)\, Ikebe Shakedown (Brooklyn)\, and Jonathan Scales Fourchestra (Asheville\, North Carolina)\, and has performed at music festivals that have become staples of the Vermont music scene: Burlington Discover Jazz Fest\, Waking Windows\, and The Manifestivus. \nOusmane Camara is a 6th generation Griot: Historically\, in West Africa\, Griots passed messages from the king throughout the kingdom before pen and paper. Griots continue to play an important role in Africa today as poets\, musicians\, singers\, and historians\, preserving their ancient traditions through song. At the age of seven\, Ousmane left his family’s home to go live with his teacher\, Djeli Sana Camara. He would study and play balafon with his teacher for the next fifteen years. Ousmane continued to play throughout Guinea and traveled through nine other African countries. He has subsequently taught students from around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Come to Congress Square Park from 6-8pm for an evening of hopping music and salsa dance (lessons included!). \nPM Salsa teacher Wendy Edwards has been teaching for over 15 years. Come at 6pm to learn basic moves and enjoy an evening of social dance with music by Primo Cubano! \nPrimo Cubano will play traditional Cuban dance music called “SON\,” which dates back to the turn of the 20th Century. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nPrimo Cubano consists of Paul D’Alessio on Tres Cubano and vocals\, Marc Chillemi on Trumpet\, percussion and vocals\, Lenny Hatch on Congas\, Bongo and Bell\, Duane Edwards on Upright Bass\, and Eric Winter on Timbales\, percussion and vocals. \nPrimo Cubano interprets the classic Son Cubano with affinity\, appreciation and inspiration bringing this vibrant music to life for audiences in Maine and beyond. \n  \nSalsa night is a series! Join PM Salsa for dance lessons and Primo Cubano for live music every fourth Friday June through September from 6-8pm.
