SUMMARY:Kafari & Jake Hoffman
DESCRIPTION:In this family-friendly event\, Kafari (rhythm bones) and Jake Hoffman (banjo\, guitar\, voice) will lead an experience that is part concert and part history lesson\, sing-along\, square dance\, and music class. After a short performance\, audience members will have the opportunity to engage directly with the artists\, learning to play the bones\, lifting their voices in song\, dancing in partners and groups\, and engaging in a communal play-along. Kafari and Jake will finish the experience with another performance incorporating audience members’ newly learned skills. Singing\, moving\, clapping\, and clicking along will be greatly encouraged throughout the event. Jake Hoffman and Kafari are two musicians with a love of old-time music\, teaching\, storytelling\, and improvised art. \nMulti-instrumentalist and singer\, Jake Hoffman was raised on jazz and rock ‘n’ roll and spent his adulthood studying American folk musics. He has toured in 20 states and 11 countries — performing and teaching ballads\, gospel and dance music from Appalachia and the American South. A community arts and cultural exchange advocate\, Jake has lived in the Portland area since 2009 and is a teaching artist and program manager with 317 Main Community Music Center. \nKafari is a pianist\, beatmaker\, and bluegrass percussionist\, specializing in the rhythm bones – an ancient instrument played by holding two in one hand\, flicking the wrist forward and backward to create sound. He first became inspired to play the bones after seeing a concert that debunked his assumptions about bluegrass and exposed him to the African-American roots of traditional bluegrass and old-time music. A resident of Portland since 2011\, Kafari enjoys teaching bones to passersby on the city streets and in classrooms across the state.

Steve Gruverman brings an extensive background in ethnic dance music to his soulful clarinet playing. Carl Dimow has developed a unique klezmer flute style\, making the instrument an equal solo voice in the music. John Clark is an incredibly versatile bass player–everything from symphony to surf–perfect for the Tummlers eclectic approach to klezmer. Nancy 3. Hoffman brings a playfulness which audiences love to both her accordion playing and her singing. Peter McLaughlin keeps the traditional role as drummer happening with elements of jazz and improvisation. \nThe Tummlers have toured in Germany where they performed to sold-out houses at the Hackesches Hof Theater in Berlin and at the ninth annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. They have also traveled to Lithuania and performed in Pakroijis\, Linkuva\, Kaunas and Druskininkai and were the first klezmer band to perform at the Skamba\, Skamba Kankliai folk festival in Vilnius. They have released three recordings and were featured performers on the LL Bean Holiday CD.

SUMMARY:Portland Swing Project featuring Hadacol Bouncers
DESCRIPTION:Join Portland Swing Project for live music and swing dancing in the Square! This month\, Hadacol Bouncers will perform. \nPortland Swing Project spreads the appreciation of swing music and dance through weekly classes and events for all levels of experience. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d music to venues throughout Maine. Absolute beginners welcome\, no partner needed. \n“The Hadacol Bouncers formed in the summer of 2013 for a Portland\, Maine Swing Dance festival and have never looked back.  A Chicago and New Orleans-syle dance band\, they have continued their close association with the dance crowd and are always looking to play for dancers. The group is a joint effort by co-band leaders Tom Whitehead (piano) and Peter Dunphy (banjo). Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and bebop piano. Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago-style jazz since he was fourteen. For the Hadacol Bouncers\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. Like any band of this size\, there are several players who rotate in and out\, but the following are the established core.” \n  \nPortland Swing Project hosts swing dances in Congress Square Park every third Friday from May through August. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Make Music Not War
DESCRIPTION:Make Music Not War is an evening with Raging Brass and Primo Cubano\, celebrating peace. \nRaging Brass is a 7-piece band collectively creating Afro-Caribbean music. They are a brass-roots dance band following the musical migration from West Africa to Cuba\, Jamaica\, and Brazil with the spirit of New Orleans. \nThis eclectic group was established in 2014 by trumpeter and bandleader Marc Chillemi in Southern Maine. Raging Brass explores roots music fueled by the rhythmic and melodic intuition of each player in the styles of Afro-Beat\, Ska\, Soukous\, Highlife\, Rocksteady\, Roots Reggae\, Samba\, Cumbia\, and Salsa. \nRaging Brass features saxophonists Mike Ayotte and Kyle Hardy\, trombonist Dave Noyes\, tubist Rafael Kielt-Fryre\, guitarist and vocalist Matt Wasowski\, drummer Gary Gemmiti\, and Marc Chillemi\, arranger/composer and trumpet player. \nPrimo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music called “SON\,” which dates back to the turn of the 20th Century. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nPrimo Cubano consists of Paul D’Alessio on Tres Cubano and vocals\, Marc Chillemi on Trumpet\, percussion and vocals\, Lenny Hatch on Congas\, Bongo and Bell\, Duane Edwards on Upright Bass\, and Eric Winter on Timbales\, percussion and vocals. \nPrimo Cubano interprets the classic Son Cubano with affinity\, appreciation and inspiration bringing this vibrant music to life for audiences in Maine and beyond.

SUMMARY:Novel Jazz Septet
DESCRIPTION:Novel Jazz is back by popular demand! \n“Novel Jazz” is a band that re-interprets the great works of jazz icons\, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. For over a decade\, they have been mining the rich musical collections of these legends (together they wrote ~3000 compositions\, of which most jazz lovers are familiar with only about ~2% of these!). Through regular trips to the Duke Ellington Collection at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. (and more recently\, the Strayhorn Collection at the Univ. of Chicago)\, Novel Jazz locates original scores of their lesser-known/rarely recorded compositions\, which they then arrange for the band and bring back to life. It is not uncommon to find their writings\, poetry and personal letters mixed in among the music manuscripts in the Smithsonian archives\, all of which they weave into the stories of each tune. Novel Jazz relishes bringing this music back to life—but (very important)— they do it with a 21st century spin. They always also mix in their better known standards for balance. They play regularly around New England\, in opera houses\, theaters and concert halls.
