SUMMARY:The Casco Bay Tummlers
DESCRIPTION:The Casco Bay Tummlers\, based in Portland\, Maine\, have been performing klezmer music since 1988! They have released three recordings and were featured performers on the LL Bean Holiday CD. They have a dramatic side\, creating and performing the music for the world premiere of “Manifest” at the Portland Stage Company and for a whimsical Belgian documentary\, “Mon noM”. \nThe Tummlers have a unique sound and a stage performance that features all members of the band. Steve Gruverman brings an extensive background in ethnic dance music to his soulful clarinet playing. Carl Dimow has developed a unique klezmer flute style\, making the instrument an equal solo voice in the music. John Clark is an incredibly versatile bass player–everything from symphony to surf–perfect for the Tummlers eclectic approach to klezmer. Nancy 3. Hoffman brings a playfulness which audiences love to both her accordion playing and her singing. Peter McLaughlin keeps the traditional role as drummer happening with elements of jazz and improvisation. \nThe band’s repertoire is versatile\, ranging from original music to traditional dances and songs of the Yiddish theater and Jewish ghetto – all with original arrangements. \nThe Tummlers have toured in Germany where they performed to sold-out houses at the Hackesches Hof Theater in Berlin and at the ninth annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. We have also traveled to Lithuania and performed in Pakroijis\, Linkuva\, Kaunas and Druskininkai and were the first klezmer band to perform at the Skamba\, Skamba Kankliai folk festival in Vilnius. Our most recent tour took us to Slovenia and Italy\, where we busked in Venice before performing as one of the featured ensembles at the Festival “Ande\, Bali e Cante” in Rovigo.

DESCRIPTION:Choro Louco is back by popular demand! \nBrazilian Choro has been around for over a hundred years\, but in this country itʼs virtually unknown. David Grisman\, Mike Marshall and a handful of others have helped introduce the music and the musicians to a larger audience\, but itʼs still largely under the radar of most music listeners…Its beautiful melodies\, complex harmonies\, and syncopated rhythms combine elements of European folk and classical\, ragtime\, jazz\, Latin\, and African music creating a style that is uniquely Brazilian. \nMembers of Choro Louco come from diverse backgrounds and can be seen in various ensembles locally. \nCarl Dimow\, flute and guitar\, has played jazz\, classical\, and klezmer music here and abroad with the Casco Bay Tummlers\, and numerous other ensembles. \nNicole Rabata\, Carl’s former student and now a teacher herself\, is best known in celtic music circles\, but also plays classical flute with the Colby College orchestra and the Bangor symphony. \nJoel Eckhaus comes from an old time/jazz/pop/vaudeville background and has applied his knowledge of the ukulele to the Cavaquinho\, Brazil’s version of the uke. \nDavid Newsam. 7-string and 8-string guitars and mandolin\, brings decades of experience as a jazz and classical guitarist to his choro playing. David is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. \nEric La Perna\, fabulous percussionist with Okbari and Zapion\, brings his great hand percussion skills to the pandeiro\, the Brazilian tambourine.

DESCRIPTION:Like a spiraling galaxy\, wandering notes from Balkan scales fill the corners of any room Cocek! Brass Band performs—trumpet\, flugelhorn\, trombone\, tuba\, all pouring out notes in varying speeds and directions.  Pockets of writhing hipsters\, grandmas\, Balkan dancers and stragglers begin to swell as the Tappan drum (traditional Eastern-European drum) pounds out rhythms that seem to juggle the wandering arpeggiations and catchy melodies of the horn section.\n\n\nA collection of original compositions influenced by Eastern-European and New Orleans dance music\, Afrobeat\, Klezmer and elements of reggae and Western Classical music is the best way to describe CBB.  The songs are inspired by acts like Fanfare Ciocarlia\, Fela Kuti\, Miles Davis\, Rebirth Brass Band\, traditional Balkan songs and chamber brass repertoire.  Dance music for those seeking something new and unique\, contemplative Old World melodies that hark to a lost era and catchy riffs that will have you singing along and tapping your foot all night long.\n\n\n**photo credit Meghan Ireland

DESCRIPTION:The Hadacol Bouncers formed in the summer of 2013 for a Portland\, Maine swing dance festival and never looked back. The group is a joint effort by co-band leaders Tom Whitehead (piano) and Peter Dunphy (banjo). Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and Bebop piano\, and Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago style jazz since he was fourteen. When forming the group\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. \nThe Hadacol Bouncers play the music of Fats Waller\, James P. Johnson\, Louis Armstrong and more. The music is a fun hybrid of New Orleans Jazz\, Chicago-style Jazz\, novelty songs and other classics from the great American songbook. (Mike Weisser\, Huffington Post\, 8.23.16). \nOn Sept. 25\, 2016\, the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence will happen at over 150 sites across the country. Portland’s event will be a free concert from noon to 3 pm at Congress Square Park. The Portland event is being sponsored by the Phoenix Chorale\, Portland’s social justice choir. “It is right in line with our mission to change the world through song” comments Dr. Deirdre McClure\, Artistic Director. \nConcert coordinator Betsey Remage-Healey observes that “we’ve had such a string of recent gun tragedies from Orlando to St. Paul to Baton Rouge to Dallas. The Concert is a chance to honor the dead and energize the living. And in Maine\, the cool thing is that we can do something in November with the background check referendum on the ballot.” \nIn addition to the Phoenix Chorale\, performers will include Lyle Divinsky\, Gina Allibrio\, Wes Covey\, Ronda Dale and Portland’s immigrant girls’ choir\, Pihcintu. DESCRIPTION:Fódhla (pronounced “foh-luh”) – Irish music from Portland and Boston \n\n\n\n\nAfter 15 years of performing together and recording on each other’s solo albums\, Portland\, Maine-based flute player Nicole Rabata and Boston-based fiddler Ellery Klein decided a group together was long overdue. With the addition of Bethany Waickman on guitar\, the trio found a sound rooted in the traditional Irish music Ellery and Nicole honed during years abroad in the Irish cities of Cork\, Limerick\, and Ennis. The trio is also influenced by the depths of Nicole’s virtuosic classical music career\, Ellery’s Americana sounds\, and Bethany’s soft-spoken\, yet driving\, guitar playing. \nFódhla have been well received at festivals such as Portland’s Saltwater Festival\, the Maine Celtic Celebration\, and the Boston Celtic Music Festival. Their debut recording\, Notes from Millpond\, was released in December 2015 to a sold-out show at Acoustic Artisans in Portland. \nBios: \nFiddler Ellery Klein brings a style steeped in traditional Irish sounds seasoned with American fiddle styles. She toured with the Billboard-charting Irish music group Gaelic Storm from 2003-2007 and was a founding member of the all-female ensemble Long Time Courting. In 2015 she was invited to be a featured soloist with Duluth\, MN’s Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra\, performing Nickitas Demos’ Double Concert for Celtic and Bluegrass Fiddle.
