We’ll make it easy & accessible for people of all ages and abilities! \nFigures of Speech Theatre creates and tours visionary works of performance forged at the intersection of poetry\, music\, sculpture and dance. \nOur vision for our educational programing—which takes place in all 16 Maine counties and beyond—is to engage imaginations\, impart skill-based training\, awaken consciousness regarding world cultures\, and expand students’ sense of life’s possibilities. We offer a range of programming and touring productions in service of that vision. \nFounded in 1982\, Figures of Speech Theatre is a four-time recipient of the UNIMA Citation of Excellence in Puppet Theater\, as well as grants from organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Maine Humanities Council\, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Honors include a six-month fellowship from the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission\, the New England Theater Conference’s award for Outstanding Achievement\, and a Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship for artistic director John Farrell.

DESCRIPTION:On June 7 from 6-8pm\, Sea Level & The Memorial Skylight will present a full park sound installation – a living moving three dimensional soundscape. As visitors navigate Congress Square Park\, they’ll experience in-the-moment individualized and collective musical compositions that are responsive to natural parameters like sunset\, humidity\, and the activity of people\, animals\, and insects. The performance will include various musical guests as well as live shadow art accompaniment directed by Ian Bannon of Figures Of Speech Theater. \nSea Level & The Memorial Skylight is the pseudonym of musician/conceptual artist Dan Capaldi. The essence of Sea Level & The Memorial Skylight is a fusion of sampled material/field recordings and tight orchestral compositions\, formatted/performed live as a three dimensional sound installation with conscious attention to the evolving trends in human attention and perceived value. Dan studied Drum performance and Film scoring at Berklee College of Music and since has composed music for all varieties of film\, live art installations as well as frequently touring the United States and Europe with various groups and as a solo artist. \n  \nThis event is part of Square Hop\, hosted in collaboration with Portland Downtown. \nFrom 6-8pm on June 7\, you can stroll — or dance\, should the mood strike — from square to square to experience some of Portland’s best & most unique local entertainment. DESCRIPTION:Take an hour out of your busy week to enjoy a free\, rejuvenating Tai Chi Chih/Qigong class! \nTai Chi Chih (pronounced tie chee cha) is like moving meditation. It consists of 19 movements and one posture. \nTai Chi Chih creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. It’s a non martial form of Tai Chi that increases the life force or vital energy that flows through us and all things in the universe. Various studies from Harvard Medical School and UCLA cite the many benefits of regular practice. \nThis class meets weekly on Wednesdays at 10 am. Always FREE to the public. \nOld pros and those who have just started practice\, as well as curious bystanders of all ages welcome! \n  \nFree Tai Chi Chih/Qigong classes will be taught in Congress Square Park May through September. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to add some whimsy to your life? This accessible circus and flow arts program can help you learn a new skill while having lots of fun. Learn from trained professionals who have experience helping people of all skill and ability levels discover the amazing world of circus and flow arts. \nThe Way We Move is an interactive flow arts/circus program for children and adults with disabilities\, and anyone else who wants to participate. This interactive activity will allow children and adults to explore different Flow and Circus arts in their own accessible way. There will be multiple types of props and movement activities for people to try out and play around with. \nPeople of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come and explore their flow.

DESCRIPTION:Get ready to shake with Pure Barre Portland Owner\, Jamie Calenda\, at Pure Barre’s first ever outdoor pop up class! \nPure Barre is a high energy\, intense\, muscle-sculpting class comprised of low-impact exercises set to upbeat music. The class flows through a quick progression of small isometric movements designed to isolate your arms\, thighs\, seat\, and abs. Pure Barre is designed to work muscles to the point of fatigue and then stretch them out in order to achieve a stronger\, leaner physique. This class is for all ages and all fitness types. \nThe class is BYOM (bring your own mat) – all you need is your mat and some positive vibes and we will be ready to SHAKE. \n*Participants under the age of 18 will require guardian signature \n  \nAbout the instructor:\nJamie took her first Pure Barre class in Boston MA back in 2013 and there an epic love story began. The obsession as a client turned into passion when Jamie was selected to join the Pure Barre NYC Team in 2015 as an instructor. That heightened level of fulfillment felt by being a part of something that is so much more than just a workout is what led Jamie to walk away from her once “dream career” in Retail Buying and take the leap into entrepreneurship. Being able to bring the very first Pure Barre to the amazing state of Maine has been a complete honor and privilege for Jamie. Her class is high energy from start to finish and her goal is to make you legitimately want to murder her for what she is making you do… and for at least one person in the class to laugh out loud when she cracks a joke that really isn’t all that funny but she thinks is hilarious.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: The Wednesday\, August 15 class is canceled. Instead\, join us for an extra class on Friday\, August 24!\nTake an hour out of your busy week to enjoy a free Tai Chi Chih/Qigong class. \nTai Chi Chih (pronounced tie chee cha) is like moving meditation. It consists of 19 movements and one posture. \nTai Chi Chih creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. It’s a non martial form of Tai Chi that increases the life force or vital energy that flows through us and all things in the universe. Various studies from Harvard Medical School and UCLA cite the many benefits of regular practice. \nClasses will be taught by Raymond Reid or Sara Leonard. \n  \nTai Chi Chih/Qigong classes will be taught in Congress Square Park in May through October\, excepting July. All classes will occur weekly on Wednesdays from 10 until 11 am.
