SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Maine Academy of Modern Music Showcase
DESCRIPTION:***This event has been postponed until May 30\, 2019 due to weather. Join us then instead!***\nThe Maine Academy of Modern Music will host a MAMMOTH Brass Band\, Rock Chorus\, and Strings Pop-Up performance at Congress Square Park on Friday\, May 10th from 6-8pm. FREE and open to the public! \nABOUT MAMMMOTH: Where MAMM is already well known for its fun\, electric guitar-driven rock programming such as its popular summer camp series\, its annual Girls Rock! concert\, and the MAMM SLAM battle of the bands competition\, the Academy’s new MAMMOTH programs allow the school to broaden its reach across genres and instrument families. \nWith a name as immense as its musical scope\, MAMMOTH consists of THREE major components: \nThe MAMMOTH Brass Band is a New Orleans style brass ensemble for students ages 10 to 18. This funky\, energetic group gives students a chance to perform in a professional setting alongside some of the best musicians in the Southern Maine area. \nThe MAMMOTH Rock Chorus program brings local children and teens together to rehearse and perform popular songs in an inspiring and supportive setting. In both small and large groups the Rock Chorus will celebrate contemporary and classic rock\, R&B\, and pop music. \nThe MAMMOTH Strings offers students a unique chamber music experience. In duos\, trios\, or quartets young string players will have an opportunity to play in the equivalent of a classical music “rock band”. Under the guidance of local professional musicians and educators\, students will have a chance to collaborate with other like-minded young musicians\, allowing for opportunities to build on individual skills while fostering a sense of responsibility to their peers. From traditional to folk\, pop to rock\, students will be actively involved in setting the musical direction of their individual groups. \nFor more information visit www.maineacademyofmodernmusic.org.

SUMMARY:Hope Day with Yellow Tulip Project
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual Yellow Hope Day Celebration is an event focused on community building and stigma reduction of mental illness. Hosted on Sunday\, May 5th in Congress Square Park from noon – 2pm\, the event will feature music\, speeches\, poetry\, wellness tables\, crafts\, and hopeful activities. Hope Day will conclude with a community walk to Longfellow Square to view the Community Hope Garden that was planted there in October. \nThe Yellow Tulip Project focuses on smashing the stigma that surrounds mental illness and building a community where people realize there is help and hope out there. The YTP is meant to let people know that “Hope Happens”. We know that the stigma often prevents people who experience mental health challenges and their families from getting the support they need and deserve. We are fiercely dedicated to helping people know that there are ways to get help\, people there for them and that circumstances can and will change. We hope that someday soon talking about mental illness will be as comfortable and normalized as talking about any physical illness and that more people will know that there is help and hope out there. Our message is simple and clear: come together- plant hope gardens-build community\, talk about mental health and smash the stigma- and we are proud of the way that The Yellow Tulip Project is spreading to communities across the US. \nFor more information or to get involved please contact us at: http://www.theyellowtulipproject.org

SUMMARY:Tai Chi Chih & Qigong Moving Meditation Classes
DESCRIPTION:Take an hour out of your busy week to enjoy a free\, rejuvenating Tai Chi Chih/Qigong class! \nTai Chi Chih (pronounced tie chee cha) is like moving meditation. It consists of 19 movements and one posture. \nTai Chi Chih creates an awareness of and influences dimensions of our being that are not part of traditional exercise programs. It’s a non martial form of Tai Chi that increases the life force or vital energy that flows through us and all things in the universe. Various studies from Harvard Medical School and UCLA cite the many benefits of regular practice. \nThis class meets weekly on Wednesdays at 10 am. Always FREE to the public. \nOld pros and those who have just started practice\, as well as curious bystanders of all ages welcome! \n  \nFree Tai Chi Chih/Qigong classes will be taught in Congress Square Park May through September. All classes will occur weekly on Wednesdays from 10 until 11 am\, led by Sara Leonard. \n  \n\nWhat’s Tai Chi?\n\n\nTai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that\, today\, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow\, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.\n\n\n \n\n\nA noncompetitive\, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching\, each posture flows into the next without pause\, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.\n\n\n \n\n\nTai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints\, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact\, because tai chi is a low-impact exercise\, it may be especially suitable if you’re an older adult who otherwise may not exercise.

SUMMARY:Pete's Posse
DESCRIPTION:Vermont’s own trad roots power trio! Composed of acclaimed musician Pete Sutherland\, his talented protégé Oliver Scanlon and the uber-dynamic Tristan Henderson\, Pete’s Posse never fails to surprise and excite! Twin fiddles in tight\, wild harmony over high-powered guitar and pounding foot percussion with mandolin\, clawhammer banjo\, jaw harp\, rocking keyboards\, and soaring vocal harmonies adding color to the Posse’s sonic landscape. \nWith a steady flow of powerful uplifting energy across the age gap\, they tap into many traditions north to south and east to west\, to distill a distinct sound that is completely their own.  The Boston Irish Reporter recently proclaimed the Posse puts forth “…(a) kaleidoscope of sounds and styles with equal parts amiability and energy.” \nSince 2014 the Posse has racked up over 100\,000 miles of touring\, released 5 albums\, and played festivals including Shetland Folk Festival\, Festival Memoire et Racine\, New Bedford Folk Festival\, and more! \nThe Posse’s signature is variety: a wide array of instruments playing a dynamic repertoire of folk roots genres; songs and tunes\, traditional and original. For over four years they’ve been bringing their brand of “multi-generational roots music” to festival stages\, dance halls and concert series across the US\, Canada and Europe.

SUMMARY:Pihcintu International Girls Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of song in Congress Square Park as Pihcintu International Girls Chorus presents a free public concert from 6-7pm on Friday\, September 14!\n\n\n \n\n\nWelcoming immigrant children from around the globe\, The Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus helps restart young lives. War-torn villages\, bloodshed\, refugee camps\, famine\, and political turmoil were devastating realities for many of these young singers before being embraced by the warmth\, companionship and harmony that Pihcintu provides.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe power of survival eases but never erases the memory of unthinkable atrocities\, physical danger and personal tragedy. Portland\, Maine\, an ever-expanding international resettlement community\, was fertile ground to bring together children from diverse backgrounds to sing as one. Con Fullam\, award-winning producer\, musician\, and songwriter\, combined his passion for music with a deep concern for the effect of world issues on children – creating The Chorus with the help of countless supporting souls from all walks of life. This unique chorus of young women from Cambodia\, China\, Congo\, El Salvador\, Egypt\, Kazakhstan\, Kenya\, Lebanon\, Saudi Arabia\, Somalia\, Sudan\, Uganda\, Viet Nam\, British West Indies\, and Zambia\, along with children whose families have been here for generations\, have formed a powerful and permanent bond. Through the healing power of music\, these vulnerable\, yet brave\, young women have learned to trust\, hope and laugh again. The children and their music are transformative. Being in their presence is a life-enhancing experience and they touch the hearts of all who hear them!
