SUMMARY:Make Music Portland feat. Instrument Petting Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Congress Square Park is excited to be a host for the 7th annual Make Music Portland! Portland once again joins hundreds of cities around the world in celebrating the Summer Solstice & Make Music Day by filling the streets with free musical performances\, music lessons\, and community play-a-long events. \nMake Music Portland is a free\, all-day celebration of sound that is open to all ages\, genres\, styles\, and abilities. There will be play-a-long events for the musicians and non-musicians to participate in and a ton of performances by Maine musicians. \nIn Congress Square Park\, join us for the Instrument Petting Zoo! — a FREE music playshop for kids! \nAdvanced high-school musicians will be setting up an instrument “petting zoo” for elementary and middle school students to explore! Introduce yourself or your child to a new instrument\, participate in a casual mini-lesson\, and gain further resources about any instrument of your choice. There will be stations in Violin\, Cello\, Viola\, Guitar\, Drum kit\, Trumpet\, Bass\, Hand Drums\, Saxophone\, Banjo and more! There will be information on accessible and affordable lessons and highschoolers will elaborate on where music education has taken them (some have toured all over the country with orchestras\, others are in rock bands\, and all have made amazing friendships through music). Learning an instrument boosts SAT scores\, improves coordination\, and creates everlasting connections between people within communities. \nStick around for more Make Music Portland with a performance and playshop with the Boston Opera Outreach Troupe from 6-8pm. \nSee all Make Music Portland 2019 events at makemusicportland.org

SUMMARY:"Best Of Hell" with 2Sheets Theater
DESCRIPTION:A smattering of of 2Sheets Theater Company’s favorite stories so far. Skunks making love on the hood of a car\, bugs looking for honey\, Eastern European servants\, time traveling accountants. Short and wise tales of hysterical existentialism\, warring ideals\, and playful philosophy. \n2Sheets Theater has been described by the Portland Phoenix thusly:\n“You never know exactly what you’ll get from 2 Sheets Theater Company\, but the small and adventurous collective of friends and collaborators produces original and devised theatrical works with tones that can shift between bizarrely comic\, affectingly vulnerable\, physically goofy and politically salient in a matter of minutes.”

SUMMARY:Hope Day with Yellow Tulip Project
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual Yellow Hope Day Celebration is an event focused on community building and stigma reduction of mental illness. Hosted on Sunday\, May 5th in Congress Square Park from noon – 2pm\, the event will feature music\, speeches\, poetry\, wellness tables\, crafts\, and hopeful activities. Hope Day will conclude with a community walk to Longfellow Square to view the Community Hope Garden that was planted there in October. \nThe Yellow Tulip Project focuses on smashing the stigma that surrounds mental illness and building a community where people realize there is help and hope out there. The YTP is meant to let people know that “Hope Happens”. We know that the stigma often prevents people who experience mental health challenges and their families from getting the support they need and deserve. We are fiercely dedicated to helping people know that there are ways to get help\, people there for them and that circumstances can and will change. We hope that someday soon talking about mental illness will be as comfortable and normalized as talking about any physical illness and that more people will know that there is help and hope out there. Our message is simple and clear: come together- plant hope gardens-build community\, talk about mental health and smash the stigma- and we are proud of the way that The Yellow Tulip Project is spreading to communities across the US. \nFor more information or to get involved please contact us at: http://www.theyellowtulipproject.org
