SUMMARY:"We\, Lilith" with Stage Rage
DESCRIPTION:“We\, Lilith” will be a devised piece that explores the story of Adam‘s first wife and how she was unfairly kicked out of Eden told in juxtaposition with stories of modern day women and non-binary or gender fluid people. Through movement\, song\, stories of her told throughout the ages\, and our own stories of survival and persistence\, with this piece we will no longer be silent. It’s time to scream like the demon goddess herself. \nPresented by Stage Rage. \n“Stage Rage was originally conceptualized by Megan Tripaldi and Beth Somerville in Portland\, ME in 2014 with the creepiest production of King Lear (at least that we had seen). From there we have been generating projects that create original concepts for established work or creating and supporting new and exciting work from local artists based on myths\, legends\, and stories that have been around for centuries. We want to continue asking why we return to classical works. Why do we keep telling these stories? How can we make them more relevant?”

SUMMARY:24-Hour Theater Marathon with Chimera Theatre Collective
DESCRIPTION:Stage Frenzy is a 24 Hour Theatre Marathon where\, over the course of 24 hours\, theater artists of various backgrounds\, skill-sets\, and artistic processes will convene to write\, direct\, act\, design\, and perform a freshly written crop of original short plays. It is also an opportunity to take risks. \nThis is the time and place for participating artists to try something new\, just for fun. To write that fantasy/scifi/horror play they’ve always wanted to write or that play that is half dance or includes puppets if that’s what they’ve wanted to explore. To direct in the round or immersively or with movement or puppetry or with bare minimum set. To act a role that’s completely off type in just 12 hours. To design on a shoestring budget with a small set and thrift stores at your convenience. To stage manage in 12 hours with other stage managers\, doing a whole month’s worth of rehearsal process in a split second. To do something different: they’ve got 364 other days of the year to do what they know. \n  \nPresented by Chimera Theatre Collective. \nForged in Portland\, Maine\, in 2015\, Chimera Theatre Collective is focused on melding together our collective life experiences and artistic tendencies to bring new and overlooked works\, ideas\, artists\, and methods into the mainstream where they belong\, while also finding ways to shift the perception of what makes conventional theater.

SUMMARY:Hungry March Band
DESCRIPTION:Hungry March Band\, the genre-defying brass band and spectacle troupe based in New York City — voted “Most Entertaining” at Bath Heritage Days’ July 4th Parade — comes to Portland Thursday\, July 25\, 2019 for a free performance in Congress Square Park. Coined “NYC’s finest guerrilla ambulatory music ensemble\,” by Time Out New York\, the group’s music and performance experience captures the essence of contemporary city life: anything can and will happen at a Hungry March Band show! Expect audience interaction\, dancer shenanigans and musician antics set to the soundtrack of powerfully played original tunes\, drawn from traditions of global brass\, jazz\, punk\, rock\, ska and everything in between. The fun lasts from 6 to 8pm and is family-friendly. \nHungry March Band has presented its high-octane\, thrill-a-minute mayhem to ecstatic audiences around the world since its debut at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in 1997. The July 25 performance marks Hungry March Band’s second visit to Maine in 2019. The band appeared at Bath’s Independence Day Parade\, after entertaining folks at Spindleworks Arts Center in Brunswick. This summer tour is in support of their most recent album\, Running Through With the Sadness\, released by Imaginator Records\, an independent record label based locally in Portland. \n“Hungry March Band is the ultimate in underground\, post-punk marching bands with a penchant for expansive improvisation. While they may be the only such ensemble daring to quadrille over hallowed ground\, suffice it to say\, Hungry March Band does it in hip-hop beats and downtown vibes.” — The NYC Jazz Record \nDon’t miss this rare opportunity to check out one of New York City’s most legendary musical and performance ensembles! Presented in conjunction with Friends of Congress Square Park. \n\nAbout Hungry March Band\n \nHungry March Band (HMB) fuses street band tradition with raw power and performance art antics. Born in Brooklyn in 1997 for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade\, this award-winning ensemble has shared their creativity with audiences throughout the United States\, Canada\, South America and Europe. They’ve a well-earned a reputation for mythical revelry\, playing urban parades\, rural raves\, subway parties\, eccentric weddings\, art processionals and other forays into the territories of the free spirit. The band’s huge sound links traditional big band with free jazz and connects the sonic space between punk rock and global brass. Imagine what it looks like when the majorettes go AWOL\, team up with with the band geeks and throw an after-hours costumed dance party in the town square. \n  \nWeb site – www.hungrymarchband.com \nFacebook – www.facebook.com/hungrymarchband \nTwitter – #hungrymarchband \nInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/hungrymarchband/ \nYouTube – www.youtube.com/hungrymarchband \nSoundcloud – www.soundcloud.com/hungrymarchband \nAlso on iTunes and cdbaby

Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and bebop piano. Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago-style jazz since he was fourteen. For the Hadacol Bouncers\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Celebration Barn's Happenstance Theater & Playshop
DESCRIPTION:***Sadly\, due to a risk of thunderstorms\, this event has been cancelled.***\nPREPOSTEROUS! is Happenstance Theater’s sophisticated\, family-friendly\, pocket-sized theatrical clown circus! \nThese charming vintage clowns play circus animals sing as a human calliope\, do the classic circus mirror routine\, invent a number of ridiculous “entrées”\, perform live music\, and execute a very satisfying slow motion number involving a pie! \nThe show premiered in the summer of 2017 at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and has been performed at The National Theater as part of their Saturday Morning family series. \nFollowing the hour-long performance\, clowns will offer a playshop in physical theater/mime for audience members who want to learn how these fantastic performers do what they do! \n  \nCELEBRATION BARN:\nCelebration Barn is an immersive physical theater center that annually draws over 200 artists from around the world who are seeking to train and create their own works. The Barn’s mission is to inspire creativity and community by harnessing the power of live performance. \nLocated in South Paris\, Celebration Barn’s restored horse barn in the woods of Maine provides an inspiring natural setting away. Celebration Barn’s 46-year history fuels a super-charged atmosphere that encourages artists to play at their creative edge–nurtured and provoked by a community of collaborators–and launch performance in new directions. \nOur alumni are currently performing on broadway\, on television\, and in internationally touring shows including Cirque du Soleil. \nHAPPENSTANCE THEATER:\nThe Washington City Paper says\, “Happenstance Theater’s ensemble comedy is a gut-busting kind of funny.” The Washington Post describes our work as “visually striking and whimsical without being precious” and calls Happenstance Theater “DC’s leading peddler of whimsy.” \nHAPPENSTANCE THEATER\, founded in 2006\, is a professional company committed to devising\, producing and touring original\, performer-created visual\, poetic Theatre. Our ensemble has been developing work together since 2012. We are multi-talented performers who craft all aspects of our pieces from concept to realization. Under the Artistic co-Direction of Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell\, we harvest imagery from the past and re-contextualize it in performances that address eternal themes of life\, death\, and the ephemeral. With the simplest means – movement\, silence\, theatrical clown\, music\, text\, physical comedy and beauty – we seek to elevate the moment when the performers and audience meet\, to lift the encounter beyond the daily and pedestrian into the realms of dreams\, poetry\, and art. Meaning is often discovered by happenstance. \nIn 2016 Happenstance received three Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Ensemble\, Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Lead Actor. In 2017 Happenstance received two Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Musical Direction.
