SUMMARY:Sister Steel
DESCRIPTION:Sister Steel is a unique and energetic professional steel drum band based in Portland\, ME. This inclusive instrument is as much fun to play as it is to listen to! Our music\, everything from traditional calypso to contemporary pop\, will be sure to have you dancing. Most of us have been playing together amidst a cultural phenomenon in Blue Hill\, ME since high school\, some of even longer\, under the direction of Carl Chase and his son Nigel. Carl brought the steel drums from Trinidad and Tobago to Blue Hill over 50 years ago and they have only been gaining in popularity ever since. Our name plays homage to the kinship we feel with the bands we grew up with and the community we come from. Through our commitment to high quality musical arrangements\, we pay tribute to the history and culture of the tradition. We believe in the light-hearted\, community-building spirit steeldrums have brought to New England and are passionate about strengthening this tradition in Portland.

SUMMARY:Amarantos Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Amarantos Quartet back to Congress Square Park this season for an encore performance. \nAll four members of Amarantos Quartet are classically trained\, though their work as an ensemble also reflects their experience outside of classical music. From playing fiddle in an old-time band\, to performing and recording with pop artists\, to playing in a Middle Eastern takht\, all four members of the quartet make a life of creatively pushing the limits. They share a belief that their instruments\, experiences\, and training allow them to cross the musical\, artistic\, and even social boundaries associated with different genres. Together as a string quartet\, Amarantos seeks to show that this ensemble of two violins\, a viola and a cello can be timeless and borderless. \nWith this foundation\, Amarantos draws from the traditional classical canon but also from other musical genres. Violist\, arranger\, and composer Bryan Brash has adapted and continues to adapt many works\, from tangos\, to jazz\, to pop songs\, for the quartet. The group also seeks to bring their music out of the traditional concert hall and into venues where classical string players can reach new audiences. Though some might see it as innovative or progressive\, this decision is partially motivated by the origins of chamber music and the string quartet\, when performances were often held in smaller venues where performer and spectator could be close and even interactive. So\, while you can experience Amarantos Quartet’s music in a more traditional concert format\, you can also catch them playing more casually in environments such as a cocktail bar or a house-concert. \nSince coming together in Portland\, Maine in 2013\, the group has performed with pop artist Halsey on The TonightShow with Jimmy Fallon; on Sofar Sounds Maine on their own\, and again as guests of artist Sara Hallie Richardson; at the TEDxDirigo Mavericks and Misfits; on The Cold River Radio Show; at The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center; and also regularly throughout Maine and the greater Portland area on their own and in collaboration with many other artists.

SUMMARY:Bess Berg & The Strays
DESCRIPTION:Bess Berg & The Strays find their groove with songs rooted in jazz\, blues\, and vintage Americana\, both highbrow and lowbrow. Musical offerings range from honky-tonk to funky\, from Fats Domino to Tom Waits\, from classic covers to fresh originals. Bess Berg leads the band on vocals and keyboard\, joined by saxophone goddess Kate Campbell Strauss\, Portland’s beloved Per Hanson on drums and harmonica\, and blues-pedigreed bass-man Scott Morrison. The band adheres strictly to the philosophy that “If we have a good time\, you’re gonna have a good time. So we’re gonna have a good time.”

SUMMARY:Swing Dance with Tom Whitehead’s Rites of Swing and Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:This group is lead by vocalist\, guitarist and pianist\, Tom Whitehead. The ensemble also features Michael Arciero on guitar\, Kris Day on upright bass and Don Whitney on drums\, with special guest Ellen Carlson on violin. The sound evokes the smooth\, acoustic feeling of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz style\, but with a distinctly American flavor of vocal standards from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s. \nWhitehead sings in a very mature\, improvisatory style that is greatly complimented by Arciero’s dynamic and virtuosic lead guitar playing. Day and Whitney provide a seamless and effortless rhythmic foundation that swings hard\, but is never overbearing. Carlson’s fiddle playing evokes the sophisticated swing of the great Stephan Grappelli along with the earthy grittiness of Vassar Clemens and Johnny Gimble. This group sails along like a Clipper Ship of a bygone era – smooth\, elegant\, powerful and a real joy to listen and dance to. www.tomwhiteheadmusic.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d swing music spanning a century to local venues. We’re also some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet – we have a bunch of fun so come join us! SUMMARY:Salsa in the Square with PM Salsa & Primo Cubano
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss our sizzlin’ Salsa in the Square evenings with PM Salsa featuring Primo Cubano! ALL Level dancers wanted!  From 6:00-6:30 enjoy a free 1/2 hour beginner Salsa lesson with Wendy of PM SALSA\, followed by live music and dancing with Primo Cubano. Come dance the night away on the 4th Friday of the month. \nPM Salsa seeks to spread the joy\, creativity\, athleticism and passion that is brought about through salsa dancing and to grow a stronger community through dance. Wendy Edwards of PM Salsa believes the best part of salsa dancing is in seeing people come together in a positive\, healthy environment while celebrating people’s individuality. Her goal is to provide people with the foundation and tools for them to build on their own individual style. Her classes are fun and welcoming for all. \nPrimo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music dating back to the turn of the 20th Century.  Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nGuitarist Paul D’Alessio\, a simple-living country man himself\, came into contact with this music on a trip to Cuba in 2004 with the Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association\, a cooperative between Brunswick\, ME and the city of Trinidad\, Cuba.  He began learning to play Son music on a guitar-like instrument native to Cuba called the tres and subsequently formed Primo Cubano\, “Cuban Cousin”. \nTrumpeter Marc Chillemi has also spent time in Cuba and has played in various other Latin groups.  He also plays percussion and sings on the choruses\, or coros\, to which the lead singer\, or sonero responds with an improvised lyric. \nLenny Hatch has loved the congas since he first heard Mongo Santamaría play Watermelon\, and he has been playing them in addition to the bongó and other percussion instruments for over 20 years now. \nEric Winter has been singing all his life and began studying Spanish at the age of 12.  He has become particularly interested in Cuban music in the last few years.  Eric also plays maracas and is the newest addition to Primo Cubano. \nKeeping it all together is Duane Edwards on the bass fiddle. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta and plays in various groups in the area.  As a jazz student\, he took very quickly to the tumbao bass pattern that makes this music so danceable.

SUMMARY:Raging Brass Reggae
DESCRIPTION:Raging Brass Reggae returns to Congress Square Park to kick off our Friday night events for the May First Friday Artwalk! This high energy 7-piece ska ensemble is sure to get you on your feet. \nRBR was formed in 2014 by trumpeter Marc Chillemi. This 7-piece brass band pays tribute to 1960s Jamaican Ska\, Rocksteady and Roots Reggae instrumentals. Created in South Portland\, Maine\, RBR includes trumpet\, trombone\, alto & tenor saxophones\, guitar\, tuba and drums. Featuring an all-star collection of musicians from Portland based bands Primo Cubano\, Rustic Overtones\, The Fogcutters Big Band\, Sly Chi\, and the Portland Rumba Project. \nRaging Brass Reggae has been a long time vision of Marc’s that has finally come to fruition. After hearing the music of the legendary Skatelites for the first time\, Marc knew he wanted to learn and play this music. \nMarc assembled a hand-pick horn section from Portland’s most inventive and soulful players. Using tuba instead of electric bass\, which is common in New Orleans music and brass bands from around the world\, the beginning of the RBR sound was in place. Marc calls this rhythmic foundation “T&D”. \nIn addition to the performance side of RBR\, there is an educational element. In 2014\, Marc was awarded a project grant by the Maine Arts Commission to start a pilot program to teach young music students about jazz improvisation and how to groove as a group through this Jamaican music and it’s history that lead to its invention. The program serves as an expansion to the existing methods used in public schools throughout the United States. Our goal is to inspire groups of horn players to explore and discover their own sound and style. Out of many one sound.
