SUMMARY:Portland Swing Project featuring Hadacol Bouncers
DESCRIPTION:The Hadacol Bouncers formed in the summer of 2013 for a Portland\, Maine swing dance festival and never looked back. The group is a joint effort by co-band leaders Tom Whitehead (piano) and Peter Dunphy (banjo). Tom has a multi-style background in blues\, New Orleans R&B and Bebop piano\, and Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago style jazz since he was fourteen. When forming the group\, Tom and Peter handpicked some of their favorite musicians from the Portland and Portsmouth jazz scene. \nThe Hadacol Bouncers play the music of Fats Waller\, James P. Johnson\, Louis Armstrong and more. The music is a fun hybrid of New Orleans Jazz\, Chicago-style Jazz\, novelty songs and other classics from the great American songbook. Hadacol has a traditional lineup of banjo/tenor guitar\, piano\, tuba\, drums\, trombone\, soprano sax/clarinet and trumpet/cornet.The music is fresh and bright and great for dancing! .www.hadacolbouncers.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. We teach\, dance\, perform and provide live and DJ’d swing music spanning a century to local venues. SUMMARY:Jeff Beam Band
DESCRIPTION:Jeff Beam is a multi-instrumentalist songwriter from Portland\, Maine. He writes\, performs\, records\, & releases melodic experimental music tinged with kaleidoscopic soundscapes\, inspired by the likes of Olivia Tremor Control\, Elliott Smith\, Deerhunter\, & Spoon. His recordings are a one-man odyssey; his live shows revolve around an energetic band of his good friends. \nHis lyrics contain observations on humanity\, existence\, perception\, and the attempt to find inner peace amidst a tumultuous outer world. Musically\, Beam seeks to fuse together unorthodox pop melody with psychedelic sound textures & colorful instrumentation. 2016 opened with the release of Is Believed To Have Been\, a 9-song full-length studio album follow-up to 2012’s Be Your Own Mirror. \nJeff Beam has played with Spoon\, Nat Baldwin (Dirty Projectors)\, Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces)\, Deer Tick\, Marco Benevento\, Sam Roberts Band\, Wintersleep\, Jefferson Starship\, White Hinterland\, and more.

SUMMARY:Community Event: Concert Across America to End Gun Violence
DESCRIPTION:It’s said that this could be the Woodstock of 2016. (Mike Weisser\, Huffington Post\, 8.23.16). \nOn Sept. 25\, 2016\, the Concert Across America to End Gun Violence will happen at over 150 sites across the country. Portland’s event will be a free concert from noon to 3 pm at Congress Square Park. The Portland event is being sponsored by the Phoenix Chorale\, Portland’s social justice choir. “It is right in line with our mission to change the world through song” comments Dr. Deirdre McClure\, Artistic Director. \nConcert coordinator Betsey Remage-Healey observes that “we’ve had such a string of recent gun tragedies from Orlando to St. Paul to Baton Rouge to Dallas. The Concert is a chance to honor the dead and energize the living. And in Maine\, the cool thing is that we can do something in November with the background check referendum on the ballot.” \nIn addition to the Phoenix Chorale\, performers will include Lyle Divinsky\, Gina Allibrio\, Wes Covey\, Ronda Dale and Portland’s immigrant girls’ choir\, Pihcintu. The concert will be introduced by Mayor Ethan Strimling\, with additional remarks by the mother of a gun murder victim\, Judi Richardson\, and Nick Wilson\, Executive Director of the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. \nThe event is co- sponsored by the Maine Gun Safety Coalition\, Maine Moms Demand Action\, Remembering Darien and the Friends of Congress Square Park. \nBig names are signing on to events in Brooklyn and LA including Jackson Browne\, Rosanne Cash\, Marc Cohn. Don Felder\, Ed Begley Jr.\, Kenny Loggins\, Ryan Cabrera and Sabian Kale. \nFor more information about the national event\, visit concertacrossamerica.org ; also visit the Portland event page at www.facebook.com/CAAportlandme/.

DESCRIPTION:Micromassé is a trio of established Portland musicians featuring organist Peter Dugas\, guitarist Max Cantlin and drummer Chris Sweet. Inspired by the great jazz organ groups of the fifties and sixties\, Micromassé also draws from traditional and contemporary African and Latin music. \n“You won’t miss a vocalist here. Micromasse\, a jazz trio featuring Max Cantlin\, Chris Sweet and Peter Dugas\, is as cool as they come; showing off some incredible chops with the finesse and nuance needed to create a true mood. It’s delightfully old-fashioned with enough originality. Standouts include Hinche and Ruelle Des Ursulines in this solid 10-song debut.”  \n– Dispatch Magazine

SUMMARY:PMA Films: When We Were Kings
DESCRIPTION:A free outdoor screening of the 1996 Academy Award Winning documentary When We Were Kings. Co-Presented by the Portland Museum of Art. Film starts at dusk (approx 8pm). \nIn 1974\, boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman came to the still-emerging and politically unstable African nation of Zaire for what Ali called the “Rumble in the Jungle\,” a highly publicized world heavyweight championship fight. Documentarian Leon Gast flew to Zaire to film both the fight and a music festival (featuring B.B. King\, The Pointer Sisters\, and Miriam Makeba) organized by promoter Don King. Gast’s footage was shelved for 22 years due to legal and financial problems\, but when it was finally released in 1996\, When We Were Kings provided a vivid portrait of the controversial Ali. At 33\, he was considered past his prime for the Zaire fight\, and his refusal to serve in the U.S. military on moral grounds was still an issue in the minds of many. But here\, Ali displays strength\, skill\, intelligence\, and tremendous charm\, making it clear how he became one of the most renowned figures in the world of sports. And\, while George Foreman is best known today as a genial commercial pitchman\, he’s seen here as a strong\, forbidding opponent\, not especially articulate and seemingly unstoppable. The film also features interviews with several notable fight fans\, including Norman Mailer\, George Plimpton\, and Spike Lee. A fascinating document of a great moment in sporting and cultural history\, When We Were Kings received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won a Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Swing Dance featuring Soggy Po Boys & Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:Born on a snowy Fat Tuesday night of 2012\, the Soggy Po’ Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans’ music as part of their Tuesday residency in their home town of Dover\, New Hampshire. In between local gigs they’ve fit in more than a hundred shows every year\, from festivals and concerts to politics-infused burlesque collaborations and street parades\, spanning Maine to Georgia.  The band is equally at home everywhere it goes\, though\, and part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. The Soggy Po’ Boys serve their jazz messy\, mixing brass-fueled mayhem with spirituals\, Meters-style old-school funk\, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition. NHPR describes the band in this way: “If you’ve been to Sonny’s Tavern in Dover\, New Hampshire on a Tuesday night\, you could be forgiven for feeling like you’ve stepped into a New Orleans jazz club.” www.soggypoboys.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today.
