SUMMARY:Micromassé
DESCRIPTION:Micromassé is a trio of established Portland musicians featuring organist Peter Dugas\, guitarist Max Cantlin and drummer Chris Sweet. Inspired by the great jazz organ groups of the fifties and sixties\, Micromassé also draws from traditional and contemporary African and Latin music. \n“You won’t miss a vocalist here. Micromasse\, a jazz trio featuring Max Cantlin\, Chris Sweet and Peter Dugas\, is as cool as they come; showing off some incredible chops with the finesse and nuance needed to create a true mood. It’s delightfully old-fashioned with enough originality. Standouts include Hinche and Ruelle Des Ursulines in this solid 10-song debut.”  \n– Dispatch Magazine

SUMMARY:PMA Films: When We Were Kings
DESCRIPTION:A free outdoor screening of the 1996 Academy Award Winning documentary When We Were Kings. Co-Presented by the Portland Museum of Art. Film starts at dusk (approx 8pm). \nIn 1974\, boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman came to the still-emerging and politically unstable African nation of Zaire for what Ali called the “Rumble in the Jungle\,” a highly publicized world heavyweight championship fight. Documentarian Leon Gast flew to Zaire to film both the fight and a music festival (featuring B.B. King\, The Pointer Sisters\, and Miriam Makeba) organized by promoter Don King. Gast’s footage was shelved for 22 years due to legal and financial problems\, but when it was finally released in 1996\, When We Were Kings provided a vivid portrait of the controversial Ali. At 33\, he was considered past his prime for the Zaire fight\, and his refusal to serve in the U.S. military on moral grounds was still an issue in the minds of many. But here\, Ali displays strength\, skill\, intelligence\, and tremendous charm\, making it clear how he became one of the most renowned figures in the world of sports. And\, while George Foreman is best known today as a genial commercial pitchman\, he’s seen here as a strong\, forbidding opponent\, not especially articulate and seemingly unstoppable. The film also features interviews with several notable fight fans\, including Norman Mailer\, George Plimpton\, and Spike Lee. A fascinating document of a great moment in sporting and cultural history\, When We Were Kings received an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won a Special Jury Recognition Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Swing Dance featuring Soggy Po Boys & Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:Born on a snowy Fat Tuesday night of 2012\, the Soggy Po’ Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans’ music as part of their Tuesday residency in their home town of Dover\, New Hampshire. In between local gigs they’ve fit in more than a hundred shows every year\, from festivals and concerts to politics-infused burlesque collaborations and street parades\, spanning Maine to Georgia.  The band is equally at home everywhere it goes\, though\, and part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. The Soggy Po’ Boys serve their jazz messy\, mixing brass-fueled mayhem with spirituals\, Meters-style old-school funk\, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition. NHPR describes the band in this way: “If you’ve been to Sonny’s Tavern in Dover\, New Hampshire on a Tuesday night\, you could be forgiven for feeling like you’ve stepped into a New Orleans jazz club.” www.soggypoboys.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. SUMMARY:Swing Dance with Tom Whitehead’s Rites of Swing and Portland Swing Project
DESCRIPTION:This group is lead by vocalist\, guitarist and pianist\, Tom Whitehead. The ensemble also features Michael Arciero on guitar\, Kris Day on upright bass and Don Whitney on drums\, with special guest Ellen Carlson on violin. The sound evokes the smooth\, acoustic feeling of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz style\, but with a distinctly American flavor of vocal standards from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s. \nWhitehead sings in a very mature\, improvisatory style that is greatly complimented by Arciero’s dynamic and virtuosic lead guitar playing. Day and Whitney provide a seamless and effortless rhythmic foundation that swings hard\, but is never overbearing. Carlson’s fiddle playing evokes the sophisticated swing of the great Stephan Grappelli along with the earthy grittiness of Vassar Clemens and Johnny Gimble. This group sails along like a Clipper Ship of a bygone era – smooth\, elegant\, powerful and a real joy to listen and dance to. www.tomwhiteheadmusic.com \nPortland Swing Project is a local organization with a passion for swing music and dances of the 1920s to today. SUMMARY:Salsa in the Square with PM Salsa & Primo Cubano
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss our sizzlin’ Salsa in the Square evenings with PM Salsa featuring Primo Cubano! ALL Level dancers wanted!  From 6:00-6:30 enjoy a free 1/2 hour beginner Salsa lesson with Wendy of PM SALSA\, followed by live music and dancing with Primo Cubano. Come dance the night away on the 4th Friday of the month. \nPM Salsa seeks to spread the joy\, creativity\, athleticism and passion that is brought about through salsa dancing and to grow a stronger community through dance. Wendy Edwards of PM Salsa believes the best part of salsa dancing is in seeing people come together in a positive\, healthy environment while celebrating people’s individuality. Her goal is to provide people with the foundation and tools for them to build on their own individual style. Her classes are fun and welcoming for all. \nPrimo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music dating back to the turn of the 20th Century.  Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa.  It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana\, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. \nGuitarist Paul D’Alessio\, a simple-living country man himself\, came into contact with this music on a trip to Cuba in 2004 with the Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association\, a cooperative between Brunswick\, ME and the city of Trinidad\, Cuba.  He began learning to play Son music on a guitar-like instrument native to Cuba called the tres and subsequently formed Primo Cubano\, “Cuban Cousin”. \nTrumpeter Marc Chillemi has also spent time in Cuba and has played in various other Latin groups.  He also plays percussion and sings on the choruses\, or coros\, to which the lead singer\, or sonero responds with an improvised lyric. \nLenny Hatch has loved the congas since he first heard Mongo Santamaría play Watermelon\, and he has been playing them in addition to the bongó and other percussion instruments for over 20 years now. \nEric Winter has been singing all his life and began studying Spanish at the age of 12.  He has become particularly interested in Cuban music in the last few years.  Eric also plays maracas and is the newest addition to Primo Cubano. \nKeeping it all together is Duane Edwards on the bass fiddle. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta and plays in various groups in the area.  As a jazz student\, he took very quickly to the tumbao bass pattern that makes this music so danceable.
